{"id":253865,"date":"2018-11-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/uptown-news-briefs-nov-2-2018\/"},"modified":"2018-11-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T07:00:00","slug":"uptown-news-briefs-nov-2-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/uptown-news-briefs-nov-2-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Uptown News Briefs: Nov. 2, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>MUSEUM TOWER TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR RETROFIT<\/h3>\n<p>The California Tower at the San Diego Museum of Man will temporarily close to the public when the city of San Diego commences a seismic retrofit of the historic structure.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Beginning in January 2019, the California Tower at the San Diego Museum of Man will shut its doors to the public due to the building modifications, which are funded by the city and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35422\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35422\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35422 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/tower-crop-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"Uptown News Briefs: Nov. 2, 2018\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 245px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 245\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The California Tower <em>(Foto cortes\u00eda)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The project construction is expected to last seven to 10 months and aims to upgrade the Tower\u2019s seismic capabilities to the latest seismic building codes \u2014 a move which would fortify it<br \/>\nagainst potential earthquake damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs stewards of the California Tower, we are pleased to partner with the City of San Diego on this seismic retrofit project,\u201d Micah Parzen, CEO of San Diego Museum of Man, said in a press release. \u201cWe look forward to welcoming many more visitors to the California Tower in the years to come as a result of this important project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regular exhibits at the museum including \u201cCannibals: Myth &amp; Reality\u201d and \u201cPostSecret\u201d will remain open to the community during the retrofit for regular hours of operation. Discounted tickets will be offered during construction.<\/p>\n<p>Visita <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumofman.org\/exhibits\/california-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CaliforniaTower.org<\/a> for more information and updates.<\/p>\n<h3>OLD TOWN CPU APPROVED<\/h3>\n<p>On Monday, Oct. 29 the San Diego City Council approved the 11th Old Town Community Plan Update (CPU) to frame land use and urban design policies for the next 20\u201330 years of community development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we rebuild our city for the future, we want to make sure that historic neighborhoods like Old Town retain their community character while also allowing for future growth that meets our housing needs and protects our environment,\u201d Mayor Kevin L.
