{"id":253863,"date":"2018-11-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/sdcnn-wins-five-san-diego-press-club-awards\/"},"modified":"2018-11-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T07:00:00","slug":"sdcnn-wins-five-san-diego-press-club-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/sdcnn-wins-five-san-diego-press-club-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"SDCNN gana cinco premios del Club de Prensa de San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>por Jess Winans<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Oct. 30 nearly 500 members of the press gathered at the Joe &amp; Vi Jacobs Center at Market Creek for the 45th Annual San Diego Press Club Excellence in Journalism Awards.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>More than 400 awards were given out to local magazines, non-daily newspapers, online and daily newspapers, trade publications, podcasts, radio stations, television channels and their writers, reporters, editors, broadcasters, and photographers.<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego Community News Network (SDCNN) earned five awards in total under Non-daily newspapers categories.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Butler, editor of the San Diego Uptown News, was presented with two awards. She won second place in the Non-daily newspapers, Breaking news category for \u201cTurning down the Music,\u201d in the Uptown News. The story broke the news that Lestat\u2019s West would be closing its doors; Butler was the only local journalist to meet with its co-owner about the rumors. To read the award-winning breaking news story, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/TurningDowntheMusic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bit.ly\/BajandoLaM\u00fasica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Butler also placed second in the Non-daily newspapers, Public Service\/Consumer Advocacy category for \u201cDockless bike craze.\u201d The Uptown News story featured a comprehensive explanation of the different types of dockless bikes in the Uptown area and highlighted how locals felt about their sudden appearance. The first was for \u201cBeating the odds\u201d \u2014 a feature story for Gay San Diego about Marine Corps veteran Liz Carmouche, the first openly gay lesbian Mixed-Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. \u201cBeatings the odds\u201d won second place in the Non-daily newspapers, Military category. To read the story, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/Caramouche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bit.ly\/Caramouche<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fulcher was also awarded first place in the Non-daily newspapers, Reviews: Live Performance category for \u201cEmpowerment through music,\u201d published in Gay San Diego. \u201cEmpowerment through music\u201d reviewed the San Diego Gay Men\u2019s Chorus\u2019 \u2018Movie Night\u2019 held this past April. To read the award-winning review, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/EmpowermentThroughMusic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bit.ly\/Empoderamiento a trav\u00e9s de la m\u00fasica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Clemetson, editor of the Mission Times Courier, earned first place in the Non-daily newspapers, Series category for \u201cRemembering Pearl Harbor\u201d and its partner \u201cA Fortunate Encounter.\u201d The series began with a story about Allied Gardens resident Arthur Roemmich, a 100-year-old veteran who served on the USS Northampton \u2014 a ship that was saved from being bombed in Pearl Harbor. After reading the article, San Carlos resident Felicia Hamwey realized her father, Lloyd Smith, was also aboard the USS Northampton. Hamwey then organized a reunion for the two WWII shipmates which was featured in the second part of the series.
