Each candidate was provided time to speak directly to HTC attendees and board members about their experience and goals for the role. Each candidate was allocated 30 minutes. After their speech, the board opened it up for audience questions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35535\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35535 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/extra-fletcher.jpg\" alt=\"Fletcher, Dumanis take on HTC\" width=\"350\" height=\"466\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 350px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 350\/466;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nathan Fletcher speaks at Hillcrest Town Council\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <em>(Foto por Sara mayordomo)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Both candidates spoke to their top priority issues, including housing, homelessness, and physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Fletcher shared his background of growing up in the South, serving in the military for 10 years, and working in the private sector for Qualcomm.<\/p>\n<p>Though he has had some political experience \u2014 serving as a state assemblymember and running a campaign for mayor \u2014 Fletcher focused on how he wants to bring a new perspective to shake things up in office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is going to take somebody new, someone who\u2019s got experience, someone who knows how to lead, someone who\u2019s not afraid to push, someone who\u2019s not afraid to stand up to drive the county in a new direction \u2014 and that\u2019s what my candidacy represents and that\u2019s the opportunity we have,\u201d Fletcher said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Hear more from Nathan Fletcher in the full audio clip below. She spent five of those 10 years in the juvenile court, creating the Drug Court program in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Then in 2003, Dumanis became the first openly gay district attorney in the U.S., as well as the first female district attorney in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>One of her proudest accomplishments was staffing the District Attorney\u2019s office with a diverse group of individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe made a point to hire people that reflected the community that we served so that people would have confidence in the people that they saw their own faces in,\u201d Dumanis said, listing women, people of color, and LGBT people as some of those staffers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Hear more from Bonnie Dumanis in the full audio clip below.
