{"id":253707,"date":"2018-09-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/rock-on\/"},"modified":"2018-09-21T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T07:00:00","slug":"rock-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/rock-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Rock on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sara Butler | Editor<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Uptown bands to shine at Normal Heights music festival<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many know Uptown neighborhoods play host to a thriving local music scene, but some may not know they host the largest free two-day music festival in all of Southern California.<\/p>\n<p>This Normal Heights festival, Adams Avenue Street Fair, is celebrating its 37th year the last weekend of September. Ten music acts were also accepted through the festival\u2019s online submission process, receiving 200 total entries.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the bands performing at the festival are Uptowners, including Wild Wild Wets and Jonny Wagon &amp; The Tennessee Sons.<\/p>\n<p>Casbah owner and local music mogul Tim Mays booked the Wild Wild Wets to headline his stage on Saturday night. This is the self-described \u201cdark and dancy, party-psych,\u201d band\u2019s third year playing the festival.<\/p>\n<p>Yielding from North Park, Ocean Beach and Echo Park neighborhoods, band members include Mike Turi (vocals\/synths), Taejon Romanik (guitar), Sarah Linton (bass), Marco Piro (drums) and Priscilla Castro (percussion).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34665\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34665\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34665 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/wild-wild-wets.jpg\" alt=\"Rock on\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/451;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wild Wild Wets are regulars on the Uptown music scene. <em>(Photo by Rick Perez)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In previous years, Wild Wild Wets played the street fair alongside \u201clocal royalty,\u201d including The Donkeys and The Creepy Creeps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe perform all over, but the Uptown music scene is where we started rustling feathers,\u201d Turi said. \u201cWe love seeing the continued support that everyone is still giving each other in aims of making a better scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe enjoy playing big local events like these, so we can play with bands we love like The Schitzophonics and The Loons, who we don\u2019t get a chance to play with very often,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Making its Adams Avenue Street Fair debut is Uptown music scene newbie, Jonny Wagon &amp; The Tennessee Sons. The \u201chillbilly R&amp;B\u201d band was invited by Steve Kader to perform on the Roots Rock stage Saturday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34666\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34666\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34666 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/adams-ave-unplugged.jpeg\" alt=\"Rock on\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonny Wagon &amp; The Tennessee Sons at Adams Avenue Unplugged earlier this year. <em>(Photo by Ingrid Martinez)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The band is made up of Jonny Wagon (vocals), Daniel Crawford (guitar), Ben Zinn (guitar), Andre Carrera (bass) and Jeff Hawthorne (drums), who hail from University Heights, Normal Heights, North Park and Ocean Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of us all hang out and work in or around the University Heights area,\u201d Wagon said. \u201cYou can usually find us at Lancers most nights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though this is the band\u2019s first time at the Normal Heights event, front man Wagon has previously performed at the festival, as well as many other local street fairs, with other music acts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the things I like about AASF [Adams Avenue Street Fair] is the sea of talent that perform on and off the stages &#8230; the food of course, and the neighborhood vibe of all the burrows coming out for the weekend to celebrate,\u201d he continued.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34668 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/crop-StreetFairMapnew.png\" alt=\"Rock on\" width=\"1206\" height=\"489\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1206px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1206\/489;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scott Kessler, executive director of the Adams Avenue Business Association, echoed Wagon. He noted that \u201cpeople come out for a good time and hopefully revisit the business district and local storefronts in the future.\u201d The festival is the organization\u2019s main marketing and fundraiser event, which runs the association all year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[We] want residents to have a fun time \u2026 it\u2019s a big celebration,\u201d Kessler said. \u201cThe hope is that people will attend the street fair and continue to hang out on Adams in the times between the other special events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny revenue from the event goes back to community improvement [in Normal Heights],\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the music, this year\u2019s festival features 300 arts, crafts and retail booths; four beer gardens; food vendors; and carnival rides. New this year is a Cornhole Tournament on Mansfield Street, where attendees can free play or register to win cash prizes. The festival \u2014 known for its beer and wine offerings \u2014 also expanded its drink menu, partnering with rum sponsor Kenny Chesney Rum, that will be serving rum cocktails at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Adams Avenue Street Fair is Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m.\u201310 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m.\u20136 p.m. on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights.
