{"id":253021,"date":"2018-03-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/uptown-actors-prepare-for-local-premiere\/"},"modified":"2018-03-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T07:00:00","slug":"uptown-actors-prepare-for-local-premiere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/uptown-actors-prepare-for-local-premiere\/","title":{"rendered":"Uptown actors prepare for local premiere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By David Dixon | Theater Preview<\/p>\n<p>While \u201cKing Charles III\u201d may focus on Charles, Prince of Wales, playwright Mike Bartlett has developed strong roles for other actors \u2014 including two local women hailing from Uptown \u2014 in his script.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Written in blank verse in a style similar to that of Shakespeare, the Tony Award-nominated play poses the question: What would have happened if Prince Charles of Wales (Richard Rivera) became the King of England following Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s death?<\/p>\n<p>A crucial person in Charles\u2019 life is his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (Sandy Hotchkiss).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she\u2019s a powerful woman who had to walk through a lot of obstacles,\u201dHillcrest resident Sandy Hotchkiss said. \u201cShe still maintains grace and levity in her personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commoner Jess (Alyssa Salter) is a supporting character also critical to the plot. She happens to be dating Prince Henry\/Harry (Travis Rynders).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32816\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32816 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Alyssa-SALTER_preview-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"Uptown actors prepare for local premiere\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 226px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 226\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">North Park resident Alyssa Salter, who plays Jess <em>(Courtesy Alyssa Salter)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShe is brave and takes a lot of risks,\u201d Alyssa Salter, who lives in North Park, said. \u201cJess is really secure in who she is as a person. At times, she can be a little too smart for her own good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hotchkiss and Salter are both performing in the regional premiere at the Coronado Playhouse. Both of them got involved with theater when they attended high school; Hotchkiss started performing during her freshman year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a period of time to get married and have kids, and then got back into [theater],\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Salter became involved with the arts when she pulled a muscle playing sports at San Diego High School. Once Salter discovered that auditions that were happening on campus, she started to focus on the performing arts during herjunior and senior years of school. She then attended graduate school at the East 15 Acting School in Loughton, Essex.<\/p>\n<p>In pursuing their craft, Hotchkiss and Salter gained plenty of experience working behind the scenes on several projects. Aside from previously participating in a traveling theater group for kids, The Traveling Munchkins, Hotchkiss is currently the producer and co-founder of the theatrical organization, Talent to aMuse Theatre Company.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Hotchkiss\u2019 favorite shows to produce for the organization are comedies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32827\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32827 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/KCIII-Pre-Press-1-b.jpg\" alt=\"Uptown actors prepare for local premiere\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/600;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(l to r) Richard Rivera and Sandy Hotchkiss at the Coronado Playhouse<em> (Courtesy of Barron Henzel)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe chose comedies more than anything because life is hard enough,\u201d she said. \u201cShows we picked included Neil Simon scripts and \u2018Parallel Lives\u2019 by Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talent to aMuse recently presented the world premiere of the play, \u201cThe Color of Light,\u201d along with Vantage Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Salter is running her own theater company, New Match Collective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re an all-female theatre company, which is a lot of fun,\u201d she said. \u201cWomen are telling their stories and are sharing them with other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Salter\u2019s ensemble comedy about internet dating, \u201cSwipe,\u201d was presented at the 2017 San Diego International Fringe Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The latest project from her group is a media project called New Match Shares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get women in San Diego and internationally to submit photos, videos, art, etc., based on a theme,\u201d she said. The first one we did was about body image and the next one we\u2019re doing is focused on mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the strength of the women who are featured in \u201cKing Charles III,\u201d Salter shared that she loves the fact that their characters are so well developed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamilla, Jess, and Catherine\/Kate, Duchess of Cambridge (Julia Giolzetti), are all truly brilliant and get the men to think deeply,\u201d Salter said. \u201cWithout them, there probably would be no show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKing Charles III\u201d will play at the Coronado Playhouse from March 23 through April 22.
