So what can one expect of a play called \u201cVietgone,\u201d described by the playwright as \u201ca sex comedy about my parents\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Well, since the playwright is Qui Nguyen, one of the pioneers of \u201cgeek theater\u201d and founder of New York\u2019s Vampire Cowboys, you can expect humor, hip-hop, some drama and ninjas (yes, you read that right). Oh, and lots of profanity and sex.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32198\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32198 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Man-and-woman-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Hip-hop and humor\" width=\"605\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 605px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 605\/350;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emy Coligado, who plays the roles of Huong\/Flower Girl\/Thu\/American Girl\/Translator, in a scene with Lawrence Kao\u00a0<em>(Foto por Daren Scott)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cVietgone\u201d plays through Feb. 18 at San Diego Repertory Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>In those last harrowing days before the fall of Saigon in 1975, Nguyen\u2019s fictionalized dad Quang (Ben Levin), a handsome helicopter pilot who trained at bases in California, takes a group of refugees to the USS Midway, their first stop on the way to a new life in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>What Quang didn\u2019t realize at the time was that his \u2019copter would be pushed into the ocean after that landing, to make room for the next group. Chaffee, Arkansas. Headstrong, willful and independent, Tong would be a feminist if she knew what that was. Interested men are not scarce, but she isn\u2019t looking for the homey-wifey thing, which drives wannabe husband Giai (Shaun Tuazon) crazy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32301\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32301 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Bike-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Hip-hop and humor\" width=\"350\" height=\"419\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 350px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 350\/419;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lawrence Kao, who plays the roles of Nhan\/Khue\/Asian Guy\/American Guy, rides with Ben Levin as Quang <em>(Foto por Daren Scott)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cVietgone\u201d is Quang and Tong\u2019s fictionalized story, told in a zippy production that is brilliantly cast and well directed by UC San Diego-trained Jesca Prudencio.<\/p>\n<p>Levin and Ko anchor the cast, which includes three other actors playing a total of 14 characters. The best of these is Tong\u2019s mother Huong (Emy Coligado), a pistol of a mama \u2014 funny, nosy, intrusive, afraid of no one and always looking out for her version of Tong\u2019s best interests.<\/p>\n<p>She doesn\u2019t know what to make of her hormonally-active daughter, who seems to drop her drawers with embarrassing frequency. Huong wants to marry her off, if only she\u2019d listen.<\/p>\n<p>But just as Quang and Tong are starting to get close, Quang and his best friend Nhan (Lawrence Kao) hop on a used motorcycle Quang acquired and take off on a road trip to California\u2019s Camp Pendleton. The intent is to catch a plane back to Vietnam, where Quang wants to see his wife and kids.<\/p>\n<p>This road trip comes complete with scenic backgrounds and a Redneck Biker antagonist (played with racist menace by Shaun Tuazon).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-32302 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Vietgone-Theater-sidebar.png\" alt=\"Hip-hop and humor\" width=\"205\" height=\"406\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 205px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 205\/406;\" \/>\u201cVietgone\u201d is a sprightly show that hops around in time and place, aided by comic book-like projections (by Justin Humphres). The show may seem simply jumpy at first but begins to make sense as the show progresses. It works because Prudencio keeps the pace going, and because she has found five superb actors.<\/p>\n<p>This is a real breakout moment for local actor Tuazon, equally adept at playing the violent redneck, a hippie dude, the playwright and blond Bobby, also attracted to Tong.<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to Melanie Chen Cole for the music-filled sound design.
