{"id":251577,"date":"2017-05-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/from-del-shores-to-armistead-maupin\/"},"modified":"2017-05-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T07:00:00","slug":"from-del-shores-to-armistead-maupin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/from-del-shores-to-armistead-maupin\/","title":{"rendered":"From Del Shores to Armistead Maupin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FilmOut sets lineup for 19th annual festival in June<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Por Ken Williams | Editor<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Very Sordid Wedding,\u201d Del Shores\u2019 sequel to his \u201cSordid Lives\u201d cult classic film and TV prequel series, will get its San Diego premiere at FilmOut San Diego\u2019s 19th annual San Diego LGBT Film Festival in June.<\/p>\n<p>The socially relevant sequel, which explores what happens when marriage equality comes to a small town in conservative Texas, will get the coveted spot as the Opening Night film.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28842\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28842\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28842 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/A-Very-Sordid-Wedding.jpg\" alt=\"From Del Shores to Armistead Maupin\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/338;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28842\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Del Shores\u2019 \u201cA Very Sordid Wedding\u201d chosen as the Opening Night movie at FilmOut\u2019s annual festival <em>(Cortes\u00eda de FilmOut)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The three-day festival runs June 9-11 at the historic Observatory North Park theater, located at 2891 University Ave.<\/p>\n<p>Opening Night festivities will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, with red-carpet treatment for writer\/director Del Shores and many of his cast members who are scheduled to attend the local premiere. They will also participate in a Q&amp;A session after the screening and make appearances at the Opening Night Gala from 10 p.m. to midnight at the Sunset Temple, directly across the street from the theater at 3911 Kansas St. Tickets are $45 with admission to both the film and the party.<\/p>\n<p>The festival closes with the West Coast premiere of Jennifer M. Kroot\u2019s documentary, \u201cThe Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin.\u201d The film begins at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 11, with a Closing Night Party afterward at the theater. Tickets are only $25 for the both the film and the party.<\/p>\n<p>The acclaimed author of the immensely popular \u201cTales of the City\u201d series \u2014 which began in the San Francisco Chronicle and spawned many books, a PBS mini-series and two subsequent series produced by Showtime \u2014 will be unable to attend due to his hectic schedule, according to Michael McQuiggan, FilmOut\u2019s longtime programming director.<\/p>\n<p>McQuiggan said the buzz is already building for Opening Night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be the only San Diego screening of [\u2018A Very Sordid Wedding\u2019] and Del Shores and most of the cast will be attending,\u201d he said. \u201cTickets are already going gangbusters since we teased our audience online with the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Friday night gala party, McQuiggan said, will be catered by a dozen Uptown restaurants, with accompanying alcohol, wine and soft drinks provided by Smirnoff and Anheuser Busch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll for only $45,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>McQuiggan called the Closing Night film \u201can outstanding documentary based on the life of the incomparable Armistead Maupin.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28843\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28843\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28843 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/The-Untold-Tales-of-Armistead-Maupin.jpg\" alt=\"From Del Shores to Armistead Maupin\" width=\"600\" height=\"899\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/899;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acclaimed author featured in \u201cThe Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin <em>(Cortes\u00eda de FilmOut)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Picked for the Boys Centerpiece this year is the West Coast premiere of David Berry\u2019s \u201cSomething Like Summer,\u201d based on the bestselling novel of the same title. It\u2019s about the only guy in his Texas high school with the courage to come out of the closet, but having to endure bullying and shunning by classmates. It\u2019s also epic storytelling, taking place over a dozen years as the boy becomes a man and pursues his dream relationship. The Boys Centerpiece will start at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, June 10. Tickets are $10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Something Like Summer\u2019 is the most buzzed about film on the LGBT film festival circuit,\u201d McQuiggan said. \u201cWe\u2019re excited to show it to our audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chosen for the Girls Centerpiece is the West Coast premiere of Jennifer Reeder\u2019s \u201cSignature Move,\u201d a comedic and heartfelt look at modern families and the complexities of love in its many forms. The Girls Centerpiece will start at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 11. Tickets are $10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Signature Move\u2019 has been getting raves around the nation,\u201d McQuiggan said. \u201c\u2018The Lavender Scare\u2019 is about a mostly forgotten chapter in American history and is powerful, insightful and relevant today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A total of 37 full-length and short films will be shown during the festival, including world, U.S., West Coast, California and San Diego premieres. Some of the selections have been shown at prestigious festivals, such as Sundance and Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur audiences love our short-film tracts and this year we will have Best of LGBT, Best of Local Filmmakers, and FrightOut LGBT Horror,\u201d McQuiggan said.<\/p>\n<p>McQuiggan and senior programmer Jeff Howell have reviewed hundreds of films and shorts that were submitted for consideration over the last year, to be included in the festival.
