Determined to save her community, Nayeli (Kenia Ramirez) leaves with her friends, Vampi (Jennifer Paredes) and Tacho (Bryant Hernandez). Her goal is to find men in the U.S. who can protect Tres Camarones from the evil criminals.<\/p>\n<p>Their journey takes the unlikely heroes to places like San Diego, parts of Tijuana, and Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Many different elements, including Ian Wallace\u2019s detailed set and projections, are used to present the numerous locations used in the script.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Woodhouse, co-founder and artistic director of the San Diego Rep, uses all the visuals to expand the scope of playwright Karen Zacarias\u2019 narrative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an international quest that covers over 59,037 miles,\u201d he said. \u201cThe show is an extremely epic one with music, combat and dancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An aspect about the piece that Woodhouse feels theatergoers will relate to is getting to see so much of the action take place near Horton Plaza. Nayeli, Vampi and Tacho cross the border fairly close to Downtown two times.<\/p>\n<p>During the evening, taco storeowner Tacho gets to experience many significant moments. Hernandez respects that Zacarias gives his character plenty of depth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an openly gay human being, Tacho has to go through so much to be comfortable with who he is,\u201d he said. \u201cTacho really is a parental figure to Nayeli and Vampi. He\u2019s a strong character.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28475\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28475\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28475 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/sam_woodhouse.jpeg\" alt=\"A life-changing road trip\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/450;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam Woodhouse calls \u201cInto the Beautiful North\u201d an \u201cextremely epic\u201d adventure.<em> (Courtesy of San Diego Repertory Theatre)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What Woodhouse loves about Tacho is his proud personality.<\/p>\n<p>Nayeli\u2019s traveling companion has a good sense of humor, can stand up to others, and is comfortable with his sexuality.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the scenes balance satirical elements with serious situations.<\/p>\n<p>Finding the right tone is fun for Woodhouse, since it allows the night to be realistic and relatable.<\/p>\n<p>Given the subject matter, the adventure features plenty of aspects that are guaranteed to stick with audiences.<\/p>\n<p>As for Woodhouse, he enjoys the diversity of the Hispanic roles. Five performers get to play several different people with no shortage of humanity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t ever get to see so much diversity and breadth of Mexican characters,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the variety of people that Nayeli encounters, Woodhouse respects the growth she goes through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the story of a young girl who discovers her power as a woman,\u201d he said. \u201cShe develops from a normal 19-year-old girl to one who becomes the heroine of her own voyage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Responsible for Nayeli\u2019s arc in the drama is Zacarias herself. She has won numerous accolades and many of her scripts have been produced in the United States. Woodhouse isn\u2019t sure if he will direct anything from her soon, but the storyteller plans on continuing to read and watch her latest projects.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28573 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Into-the-beautiful-north-sidebar-161x300.png\" alt=\"A life-changing road trip\" width=\"161\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 161px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 161\/300;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Woodhouse and Hernandez agree that fans of the source material won\u2019t be disappointed by the organization\u2019s rendition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty cool to enjoy a rich plot in two different mediums,\u201d Woodhouse said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to see Urrea\u2019s world brought to life,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p>Meant to entertain while maintaining a high IQ, Nayeli\u2019s expedition should be a strong close to the venue\u2019s 41st season.
