{"id":251325,"date":"2017-03-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/jefferson-parents-brew-up-novel-approach-to-fundraising\/"},"modified":"2017-03-13T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T07:00:00","slug":"jefferson-parents-brew-up-novel-approach-to-fundraising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/jefferson-parents-brew-up-novel-approach-to-fundraising\/","title":{"rendered":"Los padres de Jefferson elaboran un enfoque novedoso para la recaudaci\u00f3n de fondos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Andy Hinds<\/p>\n<p>Parents and community members in North Park have rallied behind their local public elementary school in a way that perhaps best reflects their neighborhood\u2019s vibe.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28167\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28167\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28167 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Taster-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>(Photos by Erick Pearson)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the geographic epicenter of San Diego\u2019s craft beer obsession, supporters of Jefferson Elementary IB STEAM Magnet are on the way to establishing an iconic local event: the San Diego Homebrew Festival and Competition.<\/p>\n<p>The event, scheduled for the afternoon of March 18, will be the second annual Homebrew Fest, and will mark a significant expansion from its predecessor, with more homebrewers, more licensed brewers and more food vendors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-28170 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Volunteers-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jefferson parents brew up novel approach to fundraising\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 212px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 212\/300;\" \/>Like last year, the fest will take place in the asphalt lot behind the historic Observatory North Park Theatre, just a few blocks east of Jefferson Elementary.<\/p>\n<p>Geena Pearson, Homebrew Fest organizer and mother of two Jefferson students, describes the event\u2019s origin as a meeting of the minds between her homebrewing husband Erick, herself and George Thornton, the proprietor of The Homebrewer, a brewing supply store in North Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was really no other major event in San Diego where the homebrewing community could get together and compete for bragging rights, so we thought we could fill that niche,\u201d she said.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28169 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Festival-crowd-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Jefferson parents brew up novel approach to fundraising\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/187;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Asked if there has been any controversy over the juxtaposition of beer and elementary students, she replied, \u201cWe have had a little pushback here and there, maybe a sidelong glance or two; but when people understand that no kids will actually be at the event, and that we are just trying to tap into [<em>pun intended<\/em>] one of our biggest local economic drivers to help the public school, the vast majority of people think it\u2019s a cool idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least 35 homebrewers will compete this year, eight local licensed breweries will contribute kegs, and three food vendors will participate.
