{"id":250879,"date":"2016-10-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/two-by-wilson\/"},"modified":"2016-10-21T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-10-21T07:00:00","slug":"two-by-wilson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/two-by-wilson\/","title":{"rendered":"Two by Wilson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por Charlene Baldridge | Revisi\u00f3n de teatro<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cygnet Theatre opened its repertory of two plays by August Wilson, \u201cSeven Guitars\u201d and \u201cKing Hedley II,\u201d respectively, on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.<\/p>\n<p>Neither play has had full production in San Diego until now. The two plays are connected in that \u201cHedley\u201d revisits the interactions and dependencies of some characters from \u201cGuitars\u201d and their descendants. The plays alternate performances through Nov. 6.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to other works, Wilson (1945-2005) wrote a series of 10 plays. All but one, \u201cMa Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom,\u201d are set in Pittsburgh\u2019s Hill District where he was born and raised. Known as The Pittsburgh Cycle or The Century Cycle, the plays are set, one per decade, and chart the African-American experience in 20th-century America. Wilson\u2019s plays garnered Pulitzer Prizes for \u201cFences\u201d and \u201cThe Piano Lesson,\u201d a Tony Award for \u201cFences,\u201d an Olivier Award for \u201cJitney\u201d and numerous New York Drama Critics Circle Awards, among them for \u201cMa Rainey,\u201d \u201cJoe Turner\u2019s Come and Gone,\u201d \u201cThe Piano Lesson,\u201d \u201cTwo Trains Running,\u201d \u201cSeven Guitars,\u201d \u201cJitney\u201d and \u201cRadio Golf.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26872\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/webtop7Guitars_Men_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26872 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/webtop7Guitars_Men_1.jpg\" alt=\"_webtop7guitars_men_1\" width=\"605\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 605px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 605\/350;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(l to r) Laurence Brown, Grandison Phelps III, Antonio TJ Johnson, Ro Boddie (Photos by Daren Scott)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cygnet guest director Jennifer L. Nelson hails from Washington, D.C., and along with associate director Lydia Fort, elicits excellent performances from her company of Southern California actors, many of whom are familiar from previous Wilson plays and readings and appearances in Cygnet\u2019s productions of \u201cFences,\u201d \u201cThe Piano Lesson\u201d and \u201cGem of the Ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cSeven Guitars,\u201d Ro Boddie, who appeared in Cygnet\u2019s \u201cStupid F**king Bird,\u201d portrays a songwriter named Floyd, who returns to the Hill District after serving time in a Chicago jail. His aims are to retrieve his hocked guitar and his reluctant woman, Vera (Yolanda Franklin). While in Chicago he laid down a hit recording, and the record company wants him to return and record more songs. He sees in this a chance to escape poverty and does whatever he can to bring about his future success, with tragic consequences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26933\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7Guitars_Yolanda_Ro_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26933 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7Guitars_Yolanda_Ro_1-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Yolanda Franklin and Ro Boddie\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/205;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yolanda Franklin and Ro Boddie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other characters who live in the two houses that are marvelously detailed by scenic designer Sean Fanning (action takes place in the backyards) are Vera\u2019s friend, Louise (Milena Phillips) who apparently owns one of the houses and rents a room to the mentally deranged Hedley (Antonio \u201cTJ\u201d Johnson), Canewell (Laurence Brown), Red (Grandison Phelps III) and Ruby (Yvonne) who is Vera\u2019s niece.<\/p>\n<p>Threats of violence hang over this play from the opening scene as the characters struggle for subsistence and a modicum of dignity. \u201cKing Hedley II,\u201d which takes place 30 years later, is equally heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26932\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26932\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7Guitars_Ladies_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26932 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/7Guitars_Ladies_1-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"(l to r) Yolanda Franklin, Milena Phillilps, Yvonne\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/197;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(l to r) Yolanda Franklin, Milena Phillilps, Yvonne<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>King Hedley II (Brown), Ruby\u2019s unborn child at the end of \u201cSeven Guitars,\u201d has just returned from seven years in prison. His father is dead. Ruby (Phillips), who became a big band singer after the close of \u201cSeven Guitars,\u201d has moved back to the Hill District to be near her King, who lives with his second wife, Tonya (Franklin). Hedley and his best friend Mister (Boddie) sell stolen refrigerators in the hope of going into business for themselves. A frequent visitor is Elmore (Phelps), a former boyfriend trying to reestablish himself in Ruby\u2019s life. Living next door is Stool Pigeon (Johnson), formerly known as Canewell, and right up the street lives Aunt Esther (unseen), the 366-year-old seer who is a presence in many of Wilson\u2019s plays.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the two plays in tandem reinforces the conclusion that nothing has changed, that the lives of these endearing Hill District characters will always be mired in despair and desperation \u2014 a bleak prognosis. Today, a miracle solution is still needed. Sadly, that\u2019s why these plays and these people are as if extracted from today\u2019s newspaper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-21-at-9.35.02-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-26930 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-21-at-9.35.02-AM.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-10-21-at-9-35-02-am\" width=\"186\" height=\"290\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 186px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 186\/290;\" \/><\/a>A telling moment occurs when Tonya defends her decision to abort her unborn child because she doesn\u2019t want to raise him merely to be gunned down. There are many such riveting moments Wilson\u2019s plays. He is doubtless one of the great playwrights of the past 100 years and has been called the American Shakespeare. Beautifully produced and stunningly performed, they are a gift to theater lovers and others, who will be fascinated by the actors\u2019 range and abilities as they strut their stuff in rep.<\/p>\n<p>There are several opportunities to see both \u201cSeven Guitars\u201d and \u201cKing Hedley II\u201d in one marathon day.
