A celebration honoring the legacy of the University Heights-based theater company will be held April 1 at the San Diego Central Library\u2019s Shiley Special Events Suite.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The grand gala, themed \u201cDaring Decadence,\u201d will feature Tony Award nominee Beth Malone (\u201cFun Home\u201d) and local politicians including County Supervisor Dave Roberts and District 3 City Councilmember Todd Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>Several people will also be recognized for their achievements, through the presentation of the theater company\u2019s Fritz Klein awards; the national honoree is James Obergefell (Obergefell v. Hodges) and the local honoree is Tom Reise (California Institute of Contemporary Arts).<\/p>\n<p>The late Dr. Fritz Klein was the founder of the CICA and a longtime financial supporter of Diversionary \u2014 the third oldest theater of its kind in the country \u2014 which has produced 140 stage productions in its 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Artistic Director Matt Morrow said the Diversionary is able to have such an impressive lineup because of the company\u2019s positive reputation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24780\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24780\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Matt-headshot-smileweb.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24780\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24780 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Matt-headshot-smileweb.jpg\" alt=\"Matt headshot smileweb\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/399;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Executive Artistic Director Matt Morrow (Courtesy of Diversionary Theatre)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDiversionary is part of the identity of San Diego\u2019s theater community,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople are ferociously passionate about the company and its health and well being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tribute video created specifically for the gala will focus on how audiences have been impacted by visiting the theatrical space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiversionary was quite important in helping a good amount of people understand their place in the world. It has been a compass for LGBT members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morrow said the video also references significant cultural and local events that occurred over the past several decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [tribute] will touch on certain shows, chapters of history and community members,\u201d he said, noting that almost 50 people were interviewed for the video.<\/p>\n<p>Former board member and longtime supporter James Ziegler said the Diversionary\u2019s impact over the years is shown by how many local performers are taking pride in their work at the theater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve noticed that in programs throughout the city, more actors are mentioning Diversionary Theatre experience,\u201d he said. \u201cWhether the star is LGBT is irrelevant, but they mention prior work at the stage. I think that\u2019s wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Ziegler\u2019s biggest contributions to Diversionary was hosting season announcement parties at his home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a way of giving back to Diversionary and getting people in the arts world to talk about the intimate entertainment center,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, Zeigler still supports every production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019ve gone to every show for many seasons,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve always supported the work they do and I have learned to really respect the craft of acting. I admire their passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morrow and Ziegler give a lot of credit to a member of the honorary board of trustees, Susan Atkins-Weathers. \u201cShe was so personally involved with the success of Diversionary,\u201d Ziegler said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAtkins-Weathers really helped us connect with the leadership of the Central Library to procure this space,\u201d Morrow added.<\/p>\n<p>Ziegler is extremely excited about reuniting with people he has gotten to know through the years with his association with Diversionary and as a former board member.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24781\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24781\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/20150204_164207_HDRwebtop.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24781\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24781 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/20150204_164207_HDRwebtop.jpg\" alt=\"20150204_164207_HDRwebtop\" width=\"605\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 605px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 605\/350;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The theater in University Heights (Photo by SDCNN)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to reacquainting myself and seeing people who I haven\u2019t seen in many years,\u201d he said. \u201cIn ways, the evening should be like a mini reunion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While \u201cDaring Decadence\u201d is sure to have bittersweet and emotional moments, organizers said the overall atmosphere will be very upbeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be super fun,\u201d Morrow said. \u201cBeyond honoring our past and legacy, the evening is going to be looking forward to the future of what the company is capable of.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-24-at-1.52.26-PM.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24860\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-24860 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-24-at-1.52.26-PM-300x103.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-03-24 at 1.52.26 PM\" width=\"300\" height=\"103\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/103;\" \/><\/a>\u201cI believe this night is not only going to pay tribute to Diversionary\u2019s legacy, but also kick off the next 30 years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Those that support the playhouse will have an unforgettable time at the early spring festivities. \u201cDaring Decadence\u201d should be further proof of why the theatrical venue is still going strong.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014David Dixon has been a fan of film and theater from a very young age, and has written features and reviews for various print and online publications.
