One never knows what dance genius, choreographer Michael Mizerany, will come up with next.<\/p>\n
The latest is the West Coast premiere of his new Compulsion Dance & Theatre, of which he is the artistic director.<\/p>\n
Performances take place as part of Diversionary Theatre\u2019s Cabaret Series, Aug. 6-9, and judging from the photos, it will be hot, hot, hot. That is, if one admires the male body, and who does not? In addition to \u201cissues decidedly male,\u201d one may expect Mizerany\u2019s in-your-face choreography, some powerful dancers and some death-defying lifts.<\/p>\n \u201cCompulsion Dance & Theatre (CD&T) will help fulfill my mission of presenting cutting edge, daring dance and theater works that are visually stunning and viscerally potent,\u201d Mizerany said.\u00a0\u201cThe company infrastructure will be a major asset in securing funding (he\u2019s obtaining 501(c)3 status), grants and stipends to help support my work as well as costs for new dance festivals.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s important to give opportunities to up-and-coming choreographers to showcase their work.\u00a0I have done this in the past with \u2018Hot Guys Dancing,\u2019 \u2018SWEAT!\u2019 \u2018Malashock\/RAW\u2019 and \u2018Dancer Briefs.\u2019 The formation of CD&T will be a major asset in continuing this endeavor,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The inclusion of \u2018& Theatre\u2019 in the company\u2019s title allows Mizerany to present plays and\/or musicals down the road.\u00a0He started out as a theater major in college and, in the last few years his interest in theater \u2014 musical theater to be exact \u2014 has been reignited.<\/p>\n As a matter of fact, the premiere of CD&T took place at his alma mater, Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, where he was asked to premiere a new work. \u201cI made a piece titled \u2018Uncoupling\u2019 and premiered it and my company there in the Midwest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n To paraphrase the creator\u2019s description, \u201cUncoupling\u201d concerns a couple (Bradley Lundberg and Erica Ruse, who recreate it here) who are emotionally distant but physically hot. \u201cSome of the movement and the lifts will take your breath away. It\u2019s incredible,\u201d the choreographer says.<\/p>\n The other premiere piece on the program at Diversionary is titled \u201cMan Clan\u201d (also the evening\u2019s overall title), in which Mizerany looks at images and stereotypes. It\u2019s a satire with extreme fighting that can be construed as homoerotic juxtaposed on another section that is very romantic. It\u2019s all about individual reaction and perception and one\u2019s comfort level with each. Mizerany says that parts of the work are very funny, and he considers it an acting piece as well as a movement work.<\/p>\n The company comprises Marty Anthony Dorado, Lundberg, Ortiz, Ruse and Nicholas Strasburg.<\/p>\n \u201cThey are incredible dancers who dance up a storm, and they\u2019re nice people, too,\u201d said Mizerany, who is currently teaching musical theater workshops at J* Company. In August, he goes to Seattle Opera to reset John Malashock\u2019s dances for \u201cThe Pearl Fishers.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cJohn set it in 2004, and we\u2019ve reset it 15 times at 11 opera companies, including twice at San Diego and twice at Michigan Opera. I danced in seven of the productions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Mizerany retired from dancing four years ago.
