{"id":248305,"date":"2015-02-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/the-original-hillcrest-fat-tuesday-returns\/"},"modified":"2015-02-13T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T08:00:00","slug":"the-original-hillcrest-fat-tuesday-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/the-original-hillcrest-fat-tuesday-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Vuelve el &#039;original&#039; Hillcrest Fat Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jen Van Tieghem | Staff Writer<\/p>\n<p>Music, food and drinks \u2014 what more could you want from Hillcrest Fat Tuesday?<\/p>\n<p>Well apparently you wanted to see the Mardi Gras-style street festival back in its original location and the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) listened.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough last year was a blast, nothing beats the original,\u201d said Megan Gamwell, HBA\u2019s marketing and communications program manager. \u201cThere was an overwhelming\u00a0amount\u00a0of response from the community to return to the original location, so we could\u00a0incorporate businesses that had become a\u00a0staple\u00a0of the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20203\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20203\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20203 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/VD030414GG297web.jpg\" alt=\"VD030414(GG)297web\" width=\"650\" height=\"457\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/457;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Revelers at 2014\u2019s Fat Tuesday (Photo by Vanessa Dubois\/SDPix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Feb. 17 the event will take over University Avenue between First and Fourth avenues from 6 \u2013 11 p.m., with two stages, two bars, an exclusive VIP area with a private bar, food vendors, beads, beads and more beads \u2014 10,000 strands to be exact.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-and-up event promises several New Orleans-inspired elements including Cajun food, a Zydeco band, stilt walkers, carnival-style performances and lots of imbibing.<\/p>\n<p>The latter will come with some help from Fat Tuesday sponsor SKYY Vodka who will be serving limited-edition specialty cocktails.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20204\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20204\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/VD030414GG300web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20204 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/VD030414GG300web-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"VD030414(GG)300web\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 199px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 199\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DJ John Joseph and his spinning skills will return.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That aforementioned VIP area will be located on Third Avenue between Fiesta Cantina and Urban MO\u2019s with a rotation of food sponsors changing each hour, including Babycakes, East Coast Pizza, Fiesta Cantina and MO\u2019s Universe. VIP ticket holders will be able to choose a food item from one of these sponsors plus two drinks and access to an elevated viewing platform in the VIP area.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you opt for general admission, you\u2019ll still have plenty to do with thousands of beads being distributed, vendors with festive masks, and food trucks on hand including: Mastiff Sausage Company, New Orleans Cuisine and Catering, and American Flavors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the new elements include a Rich&#8217;s San Diego main stage,\u201d Gamwell said.\u00a0\u201cSimilar\u00a0to what you saw at Nightmare on Normal Street, which was a\u00a0huge success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tootie from Lips will host the main stage with performances by the ladies of Lips. An additional DJ stage will offer a varied music experience and plenty of reasons to dance.<\/p>\n<p>Another tradition of Fat Tuesday that will continue for the 13th year in a row is the donation of 50 percent of the event\u2019s proceeds to the GSDBAF Charitable Foundation Annual Youth Scholarship Program.<\/p>\n<p>VIP tickets are $50 in advance and $75 the day of; general admission tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of.<\/p>\n<p>For a chance to win tickets and get a sneak peak sampling of SKYY Vodka\u2019s special Fat Tuesday Cocktail Menu, check out one of the many pre-parties at participating venues around Hillcrest (see sidebar).<\/p>\n<p>For more information and to purchase tickets for Fat Tuesday on Feb. 17, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/HillcrestFatTuesday.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HillcrestFatTuesday.com<\/a>.
