{"id":247313,"date":"2014-05-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-23T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/touring-north-park\/"},"modified":"2014-05-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-05-23T07:00:00","slug":"touring-north-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/touring-north-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Touring North Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Fidlin | Uptown News<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Local preservation groups zoom in on the neighborhood\u2019s history<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For more than 20 years, San Diego\u2019s Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) has been making pit stops throughout the county, putting the spotlight on different neighborhoods and homes that showcase the region\u2019s illustrious history.<\/p>\n<p>This year, SOHO will focus on the North Park community for its annual historic home tour weekend.<\/p>\n<p>With collaboration from the North Park Historical Society (NPHS), SOHO volunteers have a variety of events planned for this year\u2019s tour, taking place the first weekend in June. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in an awards ceremony, walking tour and interior tour of a selection of homes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17192\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/car.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17192 lazyload\" alt=\"Dryden District walking tour by the North Park Historical Society (Courtesy North Park Historical Society)\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/car.jpg\" width=\"605\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 605px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 605\/350;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dryden District walking tour by the North Park Historical Society (Courtesy North Park Historical Society)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While SOHO has delved into North Park in the past, this is the first time the organization has given the neighborhood the exclusive treatment for the tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth Park is interesting in that it has many different styles of homes in one neighborhood,\u201d said Ashley Christensen, events and outreach coordinator for SOHO.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the format of SOHO\u2019s annual tour has shifted. In the past, it often focused on a larger footprint while spotlighting something specific, such as an architectural style of home.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, however, SOHO has been doing community-specific tours. The group in prior years led tours in such Uptown neighborhoods as Bankers Hill and Mission Hills.<\/p>\n<p>NPHS Secretary Katherine Hon said she and fellow members were thrilled to learn the neighborhood was going to be featured in this year\u2019s tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re happy to partner with them,\u201d Hon said. \u201cSince we first learned they picked North Park for this year\u2019s tour, we\u2019ve all been pretty excited. We all have a lot of respect for SOHO and all that they stand for and do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christensen said SOHO\u2019s annual tour carries a two-pronged approach. Proceeds go toward funding the nonprofit\u2019s programs. But the event also is an opportunity for people to marvel at the city\u2019s rich background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to educate people about the history,\u201d Christensen said. \u201cBut we also want to make them aware. Sometimes you don\u2019t even know what\u2019s in your own backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17258\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17258\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Hamilton-tour-4044-Hamilton-Street-by-Christian-Michaels.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17258 lazyload\" alt=\"4044 Hamilton St. on the Hamilton Tour (Courtesy Christian Michaels)\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Hamilton-tour-4044-Hamilton-Street-by-Christian-Michaels-1024x680.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/680;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">4044 Hamilton St. on the Hamilton Tour (Courtesy Christian Michaels)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some of the homes featured in this year\u2019s tour are in such areas as the Dryden Historic District, a six-block neighborhood between 28th Street and Pershing Avenue, as well as Morley Field and the Streetcar Suburb on Hamilton Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope people gain an appreciation for how historically special this area is,\u201d Hon said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot that\u2019s unique about this area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the landmarks Hon is especially proud to showcase on the tour is the Water Tower, located within the one-mile Streetcar Suburb of the Hamilton section of North Park.
