The venture has received licensing support from The Harvey Milk Foundation and human rights activist Stuart Milk, who is the nephew of the late Harvey Milk.<\/p>\n<p>Brown, who has worked extensively in the restaurant business, will initially head up the menus. The offerings will focus on comfort cuisine while catering also to vegetarians and those on gluten-free diets. In addition, the diner will expand on City Deli\u2019s bakery selection, retaining some of their original recipes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re stepping into a restaurant that has given so much to our community for the past 30 years,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cWe literally have some big shoes to fill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remodeling will occur in phases, Phillips said, assuring that the colorful relief work on the building\u2019s exterior will remain intact. \u201cThat was put up there many years ago when it was a market. It\u2019s a historical part of that corner in Hillcrest.\u201d The restaurant will operate as City Deli until the transition is complete. <i>525 University Ave., 619-295-2747<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>El <b>Ruby Room<\/b> has closed, but it may likely reappear under the same name at a different Hillcrest location. Co-owner Sean Cute and his wife Brittni are currently shopping for other properties with the hopes of further expanding Ruby Room\u2019s art-music concept, and perhaps team up with a brewer. \u201cWe\u2019re not in a crazy rush to find a new place, but when we see something that looks right, we\u2019ll go for it,\u201d Cute said.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the bar\u2019s remaining partner, Paul Smith, has re-branded the original property as <b>The Merrow<\/b>, named after a Scottish mermaid. Upgrades to the sound system and remodeling of the floors, restrooms and bar occurred, and Smith reopened on time for a performance by three local bands on July 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019ll be two faces to The Merrow,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI want to re-establish it as a bar for daytime and early-evening crowds, but continue with selective shows and performances later at night.\u201d <i>1271 University Ave., 619-299-7372<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rumors are cooking about a glitzy 50s-style restaurant and lounge moving into the space left vacant by <b>The Range<\/b> after it moved across the street last year. The venture is reportedly due to open this summer as <b>The Commonwealth<\/b>. <i>1263 University Ave<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A confluence of specialty dishes from Malaysia, Korea and Thailand comprise the menu at <b>The Snooty Asian<\/b>, a new Hillcrest kitchen that recently replaced <b>Kip\u2019s Caf\u00e9<\/b>. The Pan-Asian restaurant originally launched in May but then shut down temporarily for remodeling until kicking back into gear the end of June. Murals are still going up and a new cocktail lounge is being built without interrupting regular dinner service. The owners, who also run <b>Bali Thai Caf\u00e9 in Mission Valley<\/b>, are planning a grand opening with various meal specials sometime this month. <i>3925 Fourth Ave., 619-255-6330<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 60,000-square-foot <b>Stone Brewing World Bistro &amp; Gardens<\/b> in Liberty Station is now fully open to the grand tune of an enormous garden area, a bocce ball court and a stately restaurant that once served as a U.S. Navy mess hall. Beer aficionados will find 40 beers on tap that change daily, plus 100 different labels in bottles that include Stone\u2019s Vertical Epic aged in white wine barrels and Mikkeller\/To Ol, a coveted Betelgeuze-style beer from Denmark.
