Organized by the Media Arts Center in North Park, the Festival is scheduled to take place March 7 \u2013 17.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12818\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12818 lazyload\" title=\"San Diego Latino Film Festival 2013 - Pinata\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/web-SDLFF-2013-poster-Juan-Luis-Garcia-HI-RES-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"Latino Film Festival 20th anniversary poster revealed\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 231px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 231\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The vintage film movie camera pinata designed and photographed for The 20th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival 2013 (Courtesy Media Arts Center)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Festival Director and Media Arts Founder Ethan van Thillo held a contest for this year\u2019s poster, which will be used in all promotional material for the two-week, annual event.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles-based photographer and graphic designer Juan Luis Garcia was announced as this year\u2019s poster-design winner, after an extensive process headed by the festival\u2019s 2013 selection committee. The competition received over 120 entries, and the committee chose 10 finalists to compete for a $1,000 cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia\u2019s winning work \u2013 a colorful, classic movie camera dressed up as a pi\u00f1ata \u2013 was chosen among work by artists Alejandro Franseschini, Juan Luis Garcia, Diana Mota, Hugo Espinosa, Lupe Duarte, Sami K\u00e4hk\u00f6nen, Tu Anh and Ricardo Vallejo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis being the 20th year, I wanted to acknowledge and celebrate this milestone as well as all of Latino filmmaking,\u201d Garcia said in his artist statement. \u201cWhat better way to do that than by combining the quintessential image of a pi\u00f1ata with that of the most important tool in filmmaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contest ended Oct. 31, 2012, and Garcia said the idea came to him almost at the last moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith only a couple of weeks left in the poster contest, I drove to San Diego in search of inspiration,\u201d he said in a release. \u201cI went looking to photograph local landmarks like the Gaslamp district, Balboa Park, the kissing sailor statue, the \u2018family crossing\u2019 signs on the freeway and the lighthouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not finding inspiration and discovering the sailor statue, officially called \u201cUnconditional Surrender,\u201d removed from its Downtown location for restoration, Garcia said he returned to L.A. after a disappointing day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was on my drive home that I began daydreaming of my childhood birthday parties and all the fun I had dancing, eating \u2018tres leches\u2019 cake and, of course, trying to sneak a peek through my blindfold to hit the pi\u00f1ata,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s when it hit me. The prop, he said, could also be displayed at the festival itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were able to turn it around with just enough time for me to photograph it and design the poster,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted the poster to celebrate the festival, as well as Latino filmmaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia\u2019s debut photo exhibition book, \u201cCuba Y Cubans,\u201d received international acclaim after its 2011 release, and the artist is currently working on his second book, titled \u201cFace Value: Mirror Portraits.\u201d Including his work for the San Diego festival, he also designed movie posters for the upcoming release of \u201cThe Great Gatsby\u201d as well as last fall\u2019s \u201cLincoln\u201d and \u201cDjango Unchained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to screening over 160 films from Latin America and the United States and to celebrate the festival\u2019s anniversary, the Media Arts Center will be showcasing their \u201ctop 10 groundbreaking and influential Latino films\u201d from the past 20 years. Highlights include \u201cAmores Perros,\u201d \u201cY T\u00fa Mam\u00e1 Tambi\u00e9n\u201d and \u201cDesperado\u201d from Mexico, \u201cTodo Sobre Mi Madre\u201d from Spain, and \u201cCiudade de Deus,\u201d or \u201cCity of God,\u201d from Brazil, among others.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the upcoming festival, or to purchase pre-sale tickets, visit sdlatinofilm.com or call 619-230-1938.
