Hurley | Asistente de edici\u00f3n SDUN<\/p>\n<p>San Diego, represented by the office of Mayor Bob Filner, denied a permit application from San Diego EarthWorks for their 24th annual EarthFair, which takes place each spring in Balboa Park on Earth Day. This year\u2019s fair is scheduled for April 22.<!--more--><figure id=\"attachment_12653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12653\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/EarthFair2012DotheRightThing-web-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Earth Day 2013 in peril\" title=\"EarthFair2012DotheRightThing web\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12653 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 225px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 225\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A peaceful protester at a previous EarthFair (Courtesy EarthWorks)<\/figcaption><\/figure>The EarthWorks website says the City\u2019s denial stems from upcoming changes to Balboa Park\u2019s structure in advance of the park\u2019s centennial celebration, and the liability issues construction would create. <\/p>\n<p>As part of the Council-approved Plaza de Panama project, a bridge and parking structure will be built near the center of the park. <\/p>\n<p>Construction is scheduled to begin mid-February and end October 2014, depending in part on a current court case questioning the legality of the project.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 7, EarthWorks CEO Carolyn Chase, CFO Chris Klein and board member Ahouva Steinhaus secured a meeting with the mayor and his deputy chief of staff to address the future of EarthFair.<\/p>\n<p>After the meeting, which an update on the EarthWorks website called \u201cproductive,\u201d the mayor issued a statement saying, \u201cthe City is making every effort to accommodate the event and at the same time provide a safe environment for attendees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With \u201cliability\u201d deemed the main reason for the denial, Chase said her organization already carries \u201cthe standard $2 million of liability required for special events all over the city,\u201d and she said she is confident they can get more, if the City outlines the specifics so they can get a proper assessment.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12654\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/EarthFair2012FoodArea-web-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Earth Day 2013 in peril\" title=\"EarthFair2012FoodArea web\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12654 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/168;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EarthFair attendess of the past enjoy Balboa Park (Courtesy EarthWorks)<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m doing everything I can think of to move it forward,\u201d Chase said. \u201cIf it\u2019s really about liability we can manage that. They want us to move to the west side of Balboa Park \u2026 but how does that improve the liability?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Filner was asked about the permit at the Jan. 9 Hillcrest Town Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Earth Day event is a great thing,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a long history with it and they have a long history in San Diego.\u201d The mayor then told the group that prior to him taking office a decision was made that would affect all large events in the park due to the \u201cincredibly large construction project\u201d that the bridge and parking changes would create. <\/p>\n<p>A court challenge to that construction will be heard in early February, leaving the project\u2019s status currently in question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[EarthWorks] were offered the west side, the Sixth Avenue side, \u2026 that has a different configuration [and] a different amount of grass and concrete, but they said no,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cIf the liability is real, they will have to adapt.\u201d<br \/>\nFilner said he promised to look closely at the situation before making a final decision.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City denies permits for April\u2019s upcoming EarthFair By Morgan M.
