This year\u2019s sponsor is Bridgepoint Education, an online university whose headquarters are in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>Situated on a pleasant promontory at the Embarcadero Marina Park, just behind the Convention Center, the series\u2019 location offers a place to sip champagne, enjoy a catered meal or a snack and watch the boats glide by to Coronado. Every weekend for 10 weeks, including select Thursday nights, the San Diego Pops features an intriguing variety of guest stars who, like most San Diegans, are happy to revel in the extraordinary San Diego climate. All Friday and Saturday concerts conclude with a festive fireworks display, as well as Sunday concerts for the July Fourth and Labor Day weekends.<\/p>\n<p>As principal summer pops conductor Matthew Garbutt points out, few cities have the dependable weather San Diego enjoys to be able to schedule a full outdoor series. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo mosquitoes, muggy weather or thunderstorms,\u201d he boasted.<\/p>\n<p>Garbutt is jazzed, so to speak, about the variety and caliber of concerts on offer, starting with the \u201cTux \u2019n Tennies\u201d opener June 26 that features pop star Toni Braxton. The orchestra sets the season\u2019s informal spirit wearing tuxedos and tennis shoes. He also cites principal winter pops conductor Marvin Hamlisch\u2019s \u201cStar Spangled Pops\u201d concerts during the July 4 weekend as particularly apropos, given San Diego\u2019s large military presence.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_4498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4498\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Tiempo_Libre_Pub_Photo_6_wide_shot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Tiempo_Libre_Pub_Photo_6_wide_shot.jpg\" alt=\"From Braxton to Bacharach, it&amp;#039;s an explosive Pops season\" title=\"Tiempo_Libre_Pub_Photo_6_wide_shot\" width=\"425\" height=\"283\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4498 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 425px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 425\/283;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tiempo Libre (Photos courtesy San Diego Symphony)<\/figcaption><\/figure>On the lighter side, concerts range from country sensation Leann Rimes, to the return of Kool &#038; the Gang and a rock symphony featuring the music of Queen. Interspersed are Tiempo Libre with its Cuban salsa sounds \u2013 sure to get the crowd moving \u2013 and a concert by Viva Mariachi featuring those irresistible Mexican rhythms. Both concerts open with light classics by the symphony.<\/p>\n<p>To attract all those in town for the Comic-Con convention, there is \u201cDistant Worlds: Music from the Final Fantasy\u201d on July 22, celebrating the 20th anniversary of that popular video game.<\/p>\n<p>Garbutt also hailed Jodi Benson\u2019s Aug. 20 and 21 concerts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is the voice of \u2018The Little Mermaid\u2019 and will sing hits like \u2018Part of Your World,\u2019 \u2018Colors of the Wind\u2019 from the film \u2018Pocahontas\u2019 and the enduring \u2018Over The Rainbow,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cWe are gearing this to be a very family-friendly concert with the orchestra opening with a medley of film scores including \u2018Pirates of the Caribbean,\u2019 \u2018Star Wars,\u2019 \u2018The Chronicles of Narnia\u2019 and \u2018Indiana Jones.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Popular Broadway crooner Michael Feinstein, who performed during the winter pops series last season, will make his summer debut with the music of Frank Sinatra on Aug. 27 and 28. And Burt Bacharach, whose prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Dionne Warwick graced the stage last summer, will bring his many hits on Aug. 8 in a program titled \u201cThe Look of Love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Motown nostalgia buffs will recall last season\u2019s concert by Spectrum, assaying the hits of the Temptations, Four Tops and other guy groups. On July 30 and 31, the girl groups like the Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas get the same treatment by Radiance, a group Garbutt claims almost sounds better than the originals.<\/p>\n<p>Broadway fans won\u2019t want to miss the dashing Hugh Panaro in \u201cBravo Broadway Rocks\u201d on Aug. 6 and 7, a reprise of a popular show last summer, and \u201cMamma Mia\u201d comes to life July 16 and 17 in \u201cAbbamania,\u201d a salute to the Swedish pop group, just in time for San Diego Pride weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, the symphony did a tribute to the light classical music of Italy, and on Aug. 22 they will do the same for France in \u201cA Night in France.\u201d Be sure to order some petit fours and a bottle of bubbly!<\/p>\n<p>Marking the 40th anniversary celebration of \u201950s pop group Sha Na Na on July 29, time travelers can recall their classic hits such as \u201cShake, Rattle and Roll\u201d and \u201cRock Around The Clock.\u201d The series comes to an amiable conclusion with its \u201c1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular\u201d on Labor Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Embarcadero series, the symphony will give several special concerts, including Frank Sinatra Jr. on the Midway ship Sept. 2; \u201cSymphony on the Wild Side\u201d at the San Diego Zoo on Aug. 15, a fun concert featuring animal-oriented music; and a free summer sampler on July 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.<\/p>\n<p>For tickets and information, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegosymphony.com\">sandiegosymphony.com<\/a> or call 235-0804.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jeff Britton SDUN Reporter Few events herald the advent of summer in San Diego with more panache than the San Diego Symphony\u2019s Summer Pops series.
