I wasn\u2019t cut out to be a stay-at-home mom but I knew it was time to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of 2006, Olewnik left her engineering post and began researching a location and product line for the kind of kids\u2019 store where she would want to shop. After visits to boutiques in other states and a study of San Diego demographics, the Point Loma resident chose to open Style Child in Hillcrest\u2019s Uptown Shopping Center, across from Ralphs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren\u2019s spending is very healthy in the Uptown area,\u201d she said of her decision, \u201cand there wasn\u2019t anything like what I wanted to do nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4130\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4130\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/SC3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sduptownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/SC3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"New mom fashions kids\u2019 clothing store for parents with panache\" title=\"SC3\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4130 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boys can be stylish in Tea Collection\u2019s organic cotton separates from Style Child ($30-$60).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\tThe learning curve continued after she opened the 1300-square-foot store \u2013 luxury lines with high-maintenance fabrics didn\u2019t move well, for example \u2013 but Olewnik said she has never sacrificed her fashion sense for sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt needs to be what appeals to my aesthetic,\u201d she said about Style Child\u2019s merchandise, which includes clothing for children to around age 7 as well as nursery furniture, toys, diaper bags and other gear. \u201cThis isn\u2019t just about making money \u2013 I have to love everything I carry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of her current favorites is the Tea Collection, a culturally influenced clothing line that changes by season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey pick a country and the designers travel there so the fabrics and design are inspired by the culture,\u201d Olewnik said. \u201cPlus they care about their retailers and the quality is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For summer, Tea visited Jejudo, Korea\u2019s largest volcanic island with temples that boast painted mums and lotuses, and they toured the bustling streets of Seoul. The result? Sundresses, shorts and graphic tees in vibrant colors, some with Asian prints and stitching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get a lot of parents who say, \u2018I wish they made that in my size,\u2019\u201d Olewnik said as she walked past a bright wall of Tea Collection outfits in her store. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the whole idea \u2013 the clothes should be cute and sweet and fun for the child but appealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While children\u2019s clothing does have subtle trends, Olewnik said, the best items are timeless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s finding the trifecta: quality, comfort and style,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of trend-proof \u2013 they will wear those pieces until they can\u2019t any longer [due to size]. When kids feel good in the clothes, they want to wear them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To that end, Olewnik said she especially seeks organic and \u201cgreen\u201d product lines, and furniture that meets or exceeds safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly four years in business, Olewnik said she is proud not to have compromised her original objective for Style Child to fill an unmet need in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou only get to dress your child for so many years, so you should enjoy it.
