One week after postponing the launch of the Adams Avenue Farmers’ Market from Sept. 9 to 23, organizers have now decided to delay the\u00a0event for at least six months. The problem? The California Department of Transportation owns the right-of-way to the street where the market is planned, and they aren’t about to relinquish it soon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>The city’s newest farmers\u2019 ma<\/span>rket was ready to go before the land-use conflict was discovered the first week of September. At first, the market’s backers thought the issue would be resolved within a month. But working things out with Caltrans has proven to be more difficult than they expected.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span><\/span>ocal Caltrans officials were supportive, but things bogged down at the state level, said Catt Fields White, the market’s manager.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>The city is now involved in the negotiations, as is Sen. Christine Kehoe’s office, White said. A possible long-term solution may involve the city taking back ownership of the stretch of 40th Street where the market is planned.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>“We’re working hard to resolve this, but when you’re working with a multitude of government agencies\u00a0it takes a while,” White said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Now they’re aiming to start up in March or April, 2010, she said. “Time flies, and it will be spring in no time,” said White.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Despite the <\/span><\/span>existing farmers\u2019 markets in nearby Hillcrest and North Park, there is still\u00a0demand for another,\u00a0said\u00a0Jim Schneider,\u00a0\u00a0executive director of the Adams <\/span>Avenue Business<\/span> <\/span>Association,<\/span> <\/span>which is sponsoring the market<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cIn this neighborhood,\u00a0 people are clamoring for it,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>egarding the delay, Schneider said, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cI\u2019ve gotten a lot of support from the community, overwhelming support. <\/span>The response is just so strong that we\u2019re going to do everything we can to get it going.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>METROost of the vendors at the Adams Avenue market will be <\/span><\/span>local <\/span><\/span>farmers, and the focus will be on <\/span><\/span>fresh produce, meat<\/span> <\/span>and seafood. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cA lot of shoppers, especially chefs, have let us know they need a midweek market to obtain fresh produce,\u201d White said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>The market will eventually <\/span><\/span>take place on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., on 40th<\/span> <\/span>Street south of <\/span><\/span>Adams Avenue,<\/span> <\/span>just to the west of Interstate 15,<\/span> <\/span>where Normal Height<\/span>s meets <\/span><\/span>Kensington.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span><\/span>here are 52 approved vendors. \u201cIt will be very heavy on locally-grown fruits and vegetables, from sprouts to squash to micro-greens, citrus, avocado and berries,\u201d\u00a0White said. There will be farm-direct meat for sal<\/span>e, including beef, lamb and pork<\/span>, and two fish purveyors, one selling shellfish such as oysters, clams and mussels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Fresh eggs and cheese, baked goods, sea salts and spices will be available, as well as gourmet popsicles from Viva Pops in Normal Heights. There will also be a natural pet food vendor, \u201cjust to cover everyone in your family that eats,\u201d White said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Some locally-made arts and crafts will be sold, and l<\/span>ive<\/span> <\/span>music will add to the ambience. <\/span><\/span>Eventually, White plans to <\/span><\/span>add chefs\u2019 demonstrations and book-signings to the mix.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
