Little Italy\u2019s newest addition to the neighborhood, Piazza Giannini was introduced to the Little Italy community with a monumental ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the piazza with leaders, sponsors and community members.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15710\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15710 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_3434-e1538763185949.jpg\" alt=\"Little Italy Association unveils brand new Piazza Giannini\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/450;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ribbon cutting ceremony for grand opening of Piazza Giannini <em>(Photo Courtesy of Little Italy Association)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Piazza Giannini was built in honor of Amadeo Giannini, a distinguished Italian-American and Californian, who founded the Bank of Italy, which he later transformed into one of the largest banks in the world, Bank of America. The dedication ceremony included commencement words from dignitaries as well as refreshments and hors d\u2019oeuvres.<\/p>\n<p>The dedication ceremony began promptly at 10 a.m. with opening remarks from LIA Chief Executive Administrator Marco Li Mandri, followed by LIA Legacy Committee Chair Charles Coradino. In addition, local dignitaries and community leaders shared commencement words with the community. Dignitaries in attendance included Councilmember Chris Ward, Bank of America San Diego Market President Rick Bregman, and Our Lady of the Rosary\u2019s Father Joe Tabigue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15711\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15711\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15711 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_3442-e1538763244243.jpg\" alt=\"Little Italy Association unveils brand new Piazza Giannini\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/450;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Piazza Giannini was built in honor of Amadeo Giannini, a distinguished Italian-American and Californian, who founded the Bank of Italy.\u00a0<em>(Photo Courtesy of Little Italy Association)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The project is dedicated to Amadeo Giannini who is known to many as \u201cAmerica\u2019s Banker.\u201d He invented branch banking in the U.S. and the concept of \u201csocial equity\u201d \u2013 equal access to goods and services for all. Giannini\u2019s legacy continues in San Diego\u2019s Little Italy with a bust and monument telling his story sponsored by Bank of America. Piazza Giannini also includes concrete planters with notable quotes by Giannini, bollards and tables and chairs with umbrellas to serve as a public space for residents and visitors to gather.<\/p>\n<p>Major donors to the project include Bank of America, Lara &amp; Douglas Hamm Family, Creative House x Black Swan Hospitality, Rena &amp; Behran Baxter, Laurel Pacific Gas, Mansour Family and The Hopper.<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning of August, the LIA also announced the official opening of the Piazza della Famiglia, a grand 10,000-square-foot European-style piazza dedicated to the past, present and future families of the Little Italy neighborhood.
