A whole lot of funny things happen in \u201cA Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,\u201d the 1962 winner of six Tony\u2019s which hasn\u2019t seen a major local production in more than a decade.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Roman writer Plautus started the whole thing with a comic play, but Stephen Sondheim (along with writers Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart) turned it into a musical. Kauffman &amp; Noelle Marion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the third lives elderly Erronius (John Greenleaf), who years ago lost his two infant children to pirates. A seer tells him he must walk around the hills of Rome seven times in order to find them, providing the show\u2019s major running gag.<\/p>\n<p>The plot revolves around Pseudolus (played hilariously by Omri Schein), a clever slave of Senex and Domina, and his schemes to get his freedom. Jacobs and Amy Perkins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But when the boy (played with adorable innocence by Chris M. Kauffmann) sees the lovely virgin Philia (Noelle Marion) in the window of Marcus\u2019 brothel, he gets the hots for her. The problem? She\u2019s been sold to arrogant warrior Miles Gloriosus (Jason Maddy), who is on the way to pick her up.<\/p>\n<p>Pseudolus makes a deal with Hero, the girl for his freedom, and we\u2019re off to the races.<\/p>\n<p>The complications are goofy (not to mention ludicrous), and the characters stereotypes, but who cares? They\u2019re funny, as is the entire show, stuffed as it is with sight gags, puns, wordplay and goofy songs (this was Sondheim\u2019s first Broadway musical).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15139\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15139 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/L-R-Omri-Schein-Kevin-Hafso-Koppman-photo-by-Aaron-Rumley.jpg\" alt=\"When in Rome\u2026\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(l to r) Omri Schein and Keivn Hafso Koppman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Schein, certainly one of the best physical comics in town, outdoes himself here with movement, the mugging he\u2019s known for and some great lung power.<\/p>\n<p>Every one of these characters is perfectly cast and played. Ableson\u2019s Senex acts like a few senators we could all name, and has a wonderful time with Pseudolous, Hysterium and Lycus on the soft-shoe sounds and funny lyrics of \u201cEverybody Ought to Have a Maid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15140 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Untitled-1-copy.jpg\" alt=\"When in Rome\u2026\" width=\"255\" height=\"432\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 255px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 255\/432;\" \/>Hafso-Koppman\u2019s \u201cI live to grovel\u201d Hysterium joins the fun with some mugging of his own, and Maddy plays Miles Gloriosus, as funny as he is pompous in a costume reminiscent of \u201cMan of La Mancha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Missy Marion, Amy Perkins and Jean Schroeder show (lovely) leg and bust some terrific dance moves as a trio of Lycus\u2019 whores.<\/p>\n<p>Music Director Ron Councell\u2019s four musicians make plenty of sound, and Elisa Benzoni\u2019s costumes are just right.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Rumley and Matt Novotny contribute fine sound and lighting, and Peter Herman\u2019s wigs add to the comedy quotient.<\/p>\n<p>Leave your brain at home; this show won\u2019t require it.
