It portrays a lump of coal, Nicoal, left alone in the cold and rain. --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/338;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A still from \u201cShine,\u201d a short animated film that attempts to raise awareness to plight of homeless <em>(Courtesy SDIFF)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With this support from Father Joe\u2019s Villages, Nicoal transforms into her true self \u2014 a brilliant diamond.<\/p>\n<p>The homeless services provider teamed with i.d.e.a, a San Diego-based integrated marketing agency, to conceptualize and produce \u201cShine,\u201d a moving story about homelessness and hope.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 6-7, \u201cShine\u201d will play for audiences at the San Diego International Film Festival (SDIFF).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn just three minutes, this heartwarming film demonstrates the power of compassion to transform a life,\u201d said Tonya Mantooth, executive and artistic director of the SDIFF. \u201cSDIFF always seeks out stories that move people \u2014and we chose \u2018Shine\u2019 because it inspires empathy to shift viewers\u2019 perspectives of our homelessness crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After considering more than 2,000 submissions from 68 countries, the four-day festival will feature 117 films at ArcLight Cinemas La Jolla at UTC and Regal Cinemas Gaslamp in Horton Plaza.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13150\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13150 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/web-RedCarpet_SDiFF_de-Alba-SDFF-Wed-4189-2.jpg\" alt=\"\u2018Shining\u2019 light on homeless\" width=\"600\" height=\"349\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/349;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Filmmakers on the red carpet<em> (Courtesy SDIFF)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShine\u201d earned one of six spots in the Global Consciousness category for short films.<\/p>\n<p>i.d.e.a. conceptualized and coordinated the production of \u201cShine\u201d with the creative geniuses at Dallas-based animation studio Reel FX, whose projects include Golden Globe-nominated \u201cThe Book of Life,\u201d and other short films, immersive rides and commercials for the \u201cDespicable Me\u201d and \u201cIce Age\u201d films, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to direct the short story because it\u2019s so meaningful,\u201d said Barrett Lewis, creative director at Reel FX. \u201cI think all creative people hope that their work can contribute to something that makes a difference in the world and crafting a unique and heartfelt narrative about how Father Joe\u2019s Villages helps solve homelessness was that project for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why was \u201cShine\u201d created?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSan Diego is in the midst of a homelessness crisis, and to many in our community, it appears that the end of homelessness is out of reach,\u201d said Deacon Jim Vargas, president\/CEO of Father Joe\u2019s Villages. \u201cIt\u2019s our hope that viewers will see what we see every day; It was very inspiring to be part of something [battling homelessness] we feel is so important, not only to our city, but just in terms of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bousley talked about the creative process that went into producing \u201cShine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to attract a younger donor base, millennials,\u201d Bousley said. \u201cWe wanted to get younger people to feel something and get involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bousely said i.d.e.a.\u2019s goal in producing the short animated film was to \u201ccreate something on a more visceral level that would make them feel something\u201d and then tie the project back to the cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew we could hit people emotionally, make them feel something,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we landed on our little character, a lump of coal, which we tell a little story about her transforming into a diamond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about Father Joe\u2019s Villages, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/deref-mail.com\/mail\/client\/IfIANa5OQgU\/dereferrer\/?redirectUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.neighbor.org.%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>neighbor.org.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The San Diego International Film Festival runs through Sunday.
