{"id":239321,"date":"2017-07-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/increasing-awareness-in-the-sanctity-of-life\/"},"modified":"2017-07-07T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T07:00:00","slug":"increasing-awareness-in-the-sanctity-of-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/increasing-awareness-in-the-sanctity-of-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Aumentar la conciencia en la santidad de la vida."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por Delle Willett | Arte en la Tierra<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur creativity and innovative applications continue to result in award-winning landscapes with a genuine \u2018spirit of place,\u2019\u201d said San Diego landscape architect David Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s first year studying engineering at Rutgers was very difficult; while he managed to survive, he became very disenchanted.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12513\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12513\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12513 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/web-Casa-del-Rey-Moro-Gardens.jpg\" alt=\"Increasing awareness in the sanctity of life\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/379;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casa del Rey Moro Gardens historic reconstruction, Balboa Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThen I met some bohemian-type guys who were doing fascinating drawings,\u201d Reed recalled. \u201cI said, \u2018What is this?\u2019 and the most bohemian one of them said, \u2018Hey man, this is landscape architecture.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12514\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12514 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/web-David-Reed-288x300.jpg\" alt=\"Increasing awareness in the sanctity of life\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 288px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 288\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Reed, principal of David Reed Landscape Architects<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI was hooked,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I didn\u2019t realize at the time was that, since I grew up spending most of my youthful time in a park designed by the Olmsted Brothers, I had already been greatly influenced by the magic of landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed changed his major at Rutgers to landscape architecture, and graduated cum laude in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-five years later, he still believes the landscape can be a very special and powerful place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI view my art and profession of landscape architecture as a vehicle for improving not just the quality of life, but increasing the awareness of its sanctity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Reed has been practicing landscape architecture in San Diego since 1980 and founded his own firm \u2014 David Reed, Landscape Architects (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drasla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drasla.com<\/a>) \u2014 in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>He started his company at the height of the \u201cstagflation\u201d era when he was laid off with the rest of the staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a little \u2018side job\u2019 of my own,\u201d he said. \u201cOne thing led to another and here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, with seven full-time employees, the award-winning firm has gained a reputation for excellence in all aspects of the landscape architecture profession, and is known for their high-end creative design for difficult projects, custom hardscape, parks, and habitat re-vegetation, highly detailed construction documents, extensive knowledge of masonry and horticulture.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12516 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/web-Veterans-Memorial-Garden-Balboa-Park.jpg\" alt=\"Increasing awareness in the sanctity of life\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the early days, Reed spent several years as an apprentice to master carpenters and stone masons, working under Eleanor Pedersen, a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Frank Lloyd Wright. His extensive construction experience helps facilitate the implementation process on every project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCareful site planning and the command of elements, such as stone, water, wood and plant life collaborate to evoke that sense of unique spirit in each landscape,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also spent time as an apprentice at Pacific Beach Gardens and worked as a gardener in La Jolla; his horticulture experience is often sought after by colleagues and even nursery personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Reed studies the natural environment wherever he finds it and has become well versed in both the native and cultivated flora of California. For over three and a half decades, his firm has created beautiful landscapes that continue to thrive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12515\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12515\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12515 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/web-Harbor-Club-300x276.jpg\" alt=\"Increasing awareness in the sanctity of life\" width=\"300\" height=\"276\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/276;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Harbor Club Sixth floor roof gardens renovation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The firm\u2019s reputation has earned them design projects in prestigious venues like San Diego\u2019s Crown Jewel, Balboa Park \u2014 including the successful completion of the new plaza for the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center at the Old Globe; the Veterans Memorial Garden; the historic reconstruction of the Casa del Rey Moro Gardens; and most recently, work at the Mingei International Museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur work runs the entire gamut of the built works, from large-scale habitat restoration and re-vegetation to research facilities, streetscapes, parks and plazas, ecclesiastical work, HOA renovations, and custom residential projects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Reed remains the sole principal of his firm, though he is looking to expand. For 32 years, his offices were in Little Italy, but two years ago he moved the business to 3585 Fifth Ave. in Hillcrest.<\/p>\n<p>His long-range goals are to work on his company\u2019s succession plan, start on his \u201cbucket list\u201d and toil in his own garden at his home in San Carlos near Lake Murray, where he lives with his wife, Carolyn.<\/p>\n<p>He has also been editing his book, \u201cUphill and into the Wind,\u201d chronicled in journals, from his 5,420-mile bicycle ride across the U. S. to study its natural history and flora first hand.
