{"id":239095,"date":"2017-04-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/spring-renewal-in-balboa-park\/"},"modified":"2017-04-07T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-07T07:00:00","slug":"spring-renewal-in-balboa-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/spring-renewal-in-balboa-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring renewal in Balboa Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Reema Makani Boccia |\u00a0Growing Balboa Park<\/p>\n<p>Spring is a time of renewal, and there is no better place to see this firsthand than at the Jewel of San Diego, Balboa Park.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11872 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/149.jpg\" alt=\"Spring renewal in Balboa Park\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/>There are a number of entities that help to preserve all the park has to offer, and <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofbalboapark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friends of Balboa Park<\/a> is one such affinity organization that is proud to be an integral part of bringing enhancements to the park\u2019s many facets.<\/p>\n<p>Below are just a few of the projects and events it provides for the community to enjoy this spring:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gate houses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Friends of Balboa Park recently hosted a ribbon cutting for its latest completed restoration project, the two gate houses on each side of the Cabrillo Bridge entrance to Balboa Park.<\/p>\n<p>The structures were originally built in 1915 as ticket booths for the Panama-California Exposition. Over the years, they fell into disrepair and disuse, but were taken on as a project by Friends in 2014.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11876 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0203.jpg\" alt=\"Spring renewal in Balboa Park\" width=\"600\" height=\"411\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/411;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>March 29 marked the momentous occasion in which they were restored to their original splendor, thanks to Friends of Balboa Park donors, volunteers and local preservation experts.<\/p>\n<p>Beautiful structures now welcome visitors to the west end of the park, just as was intended more than a century ago.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>California Tower chimes on <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Friends has recently undertaken upgrading one of the most iconic park structures, the California Tower.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11874 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/CA-Tower-speakers-project_030817-site-visit_01-1-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"Spring renewal in Balboa Park\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 223px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 223\/300;\" \/>The ornate, 208-foot-tall Spanish-style monument was completed in 1914 to greet visitors to the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.<\/p>\n<p>In 1946, a 30-chime carillon was installed, ringing musical chimes played on a keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967, the carillon was upgraded with a \u201c100-bell symphonic carillon,\u201d and the chimes were amplified through eight large bullhorn speakers mounted in the arched openings near the top of the tower.<\/p>\n<p>The old speakers detract from the old Spanish bell tower as well as the park experience and lead people to believe the chimes are pre-recorded, even though they are live.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11875 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/CA-Tower-speakers-project_030817-site-visit_13-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Spring renewal in Balboa Park\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 225px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 225\/300;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Friends of Balboa Park is correcting this 70-year-old eyesore by consulting with acoustical engineers to upgrade the 1940s technology with smaller, state-of-the-art speakers.<\/p>\n<p>The plans call for new weather-resistant speakers, new wiring and possibly a new amplifier.<\/p>\n<p>The new speakers will be smaller than the current speakers and set back into the arches to help conceal them in the shadows.<\/p>\n<p>Look for the enhanced California Tower in the fall, and we hope you will think of Friends for its contribution to the park!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Arbor Day, April 28<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Did you know Friends of Balboa Park is the only official partner with the city\u2019s Park and Recreation Department that facilitates a member of the community dedicating a tree in Balboa Park?<\/p>\n<p>As such, National Arbor Day will be celebrated on Friday, April 28 by dedicating 44 new trees to be planted throughout the park.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11871 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/007-1.jpg\" alt=\"Spring renewal in Balboa Park\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were a number of trees uprooted during recent winter storms, and this wonderful program allows members of the public to help ensure the park remains lush at minimal cost to the city.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about dedicating a tree, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.FriendsofBalboaPark.org\">FriendsofBalboaPark.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Butterfly Release, May 27<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11877 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Monarch3-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Spring renewal in Balboa Park\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/240;\" \/>Friends is thrilled to invite the community to its 10th annual Butterfly Release on Saturday, May 27 in the Zoro Garden of Balboa Park.<\/p>\n<p>The free event is officially part of the annual Fiesta Botanica, and will provide a hands-on educational experience and family-oriented entertainment to more than 3,000 people, including the Hullabaloo Band, Fern Street Circus and Ms. Smarty-Plants.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the community\u2019s generous sponsors, 1,000 butterflies will be released into the park this year, which help pollinate the local flora and enhance the park.
