If getting to know your backyard park \u2014 aka Balboa Park \u2014 is one of your resolutions, take a stroll through the grounds and check out a few new things <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofbalboapark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friends of Balboa Park<\/a> has recently been busy tending to.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11509\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11509\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11509 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kiosk-PdP-9-8-2016-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"New year, new jewels\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 225px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 225\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11509\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An information kiosk updated by Friends <em>(Photo by Leslie Yu)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Information kiosks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Five information kiosks have been strategically placed throughout Balboa Park, first installed in 2007, thanks to generous support from community donors.<\/p>\n<p>These helpful kiosks feature ATMs, sponsorship messages, and up-to-date information and maps for park events, exhibitions, gardens, tours, restaurants and comfort stations.<\/p>\n<p>They reach more than 65,000 visitors each year, helping patrons navigate the park\u2019s extensive cultural offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Stop by a kiosk and discover all that the park has to offer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11508\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11508\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11508 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Gate-House-by-Richard-Seignious-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"New year, new jewels\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of two gate houses restored by Friends of Balboa Park <em>(Photo by Richard Seignious)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Gate houses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As one approaches the Cabrillo Bridge entrance to Balboa Park, there used to be two ramshackle huts that dotted each side of the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>They have been restored to their original splendor from the 1915 Exposition, thanks to Friends of Balboa Park donors, volunteers and local preservation experts.<\/p>\n<p>Beautiful structures now welcome visitors to the west end of the park, just as was intended more than a century ago.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11507\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11507 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Betty-Peabody-300x278.png\" alt=\"New year, new jewels\" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/278;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Betty Peabody bestowed with the California \u201cChampion of the Community\u201d award. <em>(Photo by Sam Hodgson)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>State recognition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The California Park &amp; Recreation Society recently honored Friends of Balboa Park founder and current board member Betty Peabody with the California \u201cChampion of the Community\u201d award.<\/p>\n<p>A park volunteer since 1969, Peabody founded Friends of Balboa Park in 1999, helping to spearhead numerous initiatives for the park, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofbalboapark.org\/ongoing-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adopt-A-Plot Program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofbalboapark.org\/programs\/dedicated-bench-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bench tributes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofbalboapark.org\/programs\/dedicate-a-tree-in-balboa-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tree dedications<\/a> and other programs unique to Friends that facilitate the community\u2019s direct involvement in the enhancement of Balboa Park.<\/p>\n<p>She has since served on the board of directors, and remains an active volunteer on numerous park committees, always advocating for the \u201cJewel of San Diego.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>concurso fotogr\u00e1fico<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Friends of Balboa Park are hosting a photo contest open to people of all ages who wish to capture some of our recent flagship projects. Help us commemorate the aforementioned milestones, along with other projects Friends of Balboa Park have completed.<\/p>\n<p>The winner will receive a Balboa Park gift basket and recognition on the Friends website and social media channels to thank them for their support.<\/p>\n<p>Use #FriendsOfBalboaPark and #BestOfBalboaPark to make sure we find your photos. Contest closes Feb. 21.<\/p>\n<p>Friends\u2019 mission is to enhance and preserve Balboa Park and we strive to do this in every project that we take on. We accomplish this through generous donors as well as dedicated volunteers who commit their time, talents and treasure.<\/p>\n<p>If getting more involved in your neighborhood is one of your objectives for 2017, we hope you will consider <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofbalboapark.org\/support-us\/membership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joining Friends of Balboa Park<\/a>.
