The theme this year was \u201cAll the Steamy Things That Go Bump in the Night,\u201d and this fun-filled convention included two fashion shows and a masquerade ball.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The first fashion show, \u201cScreampunk!\u201d was held at the outdoor stage on Saturday, and all the models came out wearing their creepy and darker side. Some of the popular topics in the late 1800s were ghosts, witches, mummies and mystical beasts and the participants took these trends to fashion their costumes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10966\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10966\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1.-Kimberly.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10966 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/1.-Kimberly-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"1-kimberly\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 229px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 229\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10966\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gaslight Gathering was based upon seasons; Kimberly Carlisle is the month of December (Photo by Diana Cavagnaro)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The mistress of ceremonies was Lady Mari aka Lady Shadow \u2014 San Diego\u2019s only Steampunk Vampyre \u2014 who also gave a lecture during the convention on how to purchase and wear a corset.<\/p>\n<p>The second fashion show and ice cream social was held on Sunday, in the Le Chanticleer Room of the resort\u2019s Regency Tower. The models wore fashion reproductions from the Regency (1811-1837), Victorian (1837-1901) and Edwardian (1901-1914) eras. Inspired by Alphonse Mucha\u2019s art deco drawings, the theme was \u201cThe Four Seasons\u201d and all fashions were designed with a special season or month in mind. Cindy Pirelli was the mistress of ceremonies for this social gathering. Piselli and several of the other models belong to an equestrian group called the Victorian Roses, who will be riding in the next Rose Parade.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday night, the 198th anniversary of Victor Von Frankenstein\u2019s Monster Ball was held in the Garden Salon and the San Diego High Society Jazz Band entertained the crowd. There were also classes, such as \u201cBuild Your Own Retractable Wings,\u201d \u201cMake a Victorian Neck Cuff,\u201d or \u201cHow to Make Interactive Gadgets.\u201d Additional events included teapot races and screenings of classic movies, such \u201cBram Stoker\u2019s Dracula\u201d and \u201cThe Bride of Frankenstein.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights was the Grand Bazaar with vendors selling all the must-have items for your Steampunk costume.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Gaslight partnered with Just In Time Foster Youth. The organization provides support to local San Diego foster youth that are in transition from foster care to independence as adults when they \u201cage out\u201d of the system.
