{"id":238547,"date":"2016-07-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/avoiding-the-wireless-crunch\/"},"modified":"2016-07-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-01T07:00:00","slug":"avoiding-the-wireless-crunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/avoiding-the-wireless-crunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Evitar la crisis inal\u00e1mbrica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Desirae Holland<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Free Wi-Fi to be offered Downtown during July events<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe three things people love are baseball, Comic-Con, and Wi-Fi,\u201d were Mayor Kevin Faulconer\u2019s opening remarks at a recent press conference held June 21 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and L Street, just steps away from Petco Park and in the shadow of the Convention Center.<\/p>\n<p>Faulconer was there to announce that the city of San Diego, in partnership with Cox Communications, plans to open up dozens of Wi-Fi hotspots throughout Downtown San Diego\u2019s neighborhoods, offering free unlimited access to the public for several strategic weeks during the month of July.<\/p>\n<p>The arrival of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Petco Park from July 8-12, and Comic-Con International, from July 21-24 at the San Diego Convention Center, means tens of thousands will be flocking to the area and accessing their mobile devices.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10374\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/WiFi-presserwebtop.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10374 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/WiFi-presserwebtop.jpg\" alt=\"WiFi presserwebtop\" width=\"605\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 605px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 605\/350;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(l to r) Tourism Authority\u2019s Kerri Verbeke Kapich; Digi the Cox mascot; Comic-Con International\u2019s San Diego Director of Marketing and Public Relations, David Glanzer; Mayor Faulconer; Cox Communication\u2019s Sam Attisha. (Courtesy Cox Communications)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cToday, so much of our local economy rests on internet service and with today\u2019s announcement, San Diego\u2019s tourism economy is also entering the digital age,\u201d Faulconer said. \u201cEvents like Comic-Con and the All Star Game will be some of our biggest tourist attractions this year \u2014 providing big boosts to our economy, which will help to create jobs for residents and revenue for businesses across our city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor also thanked Cox for serving the residents of San Diego for more than 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing Cox\u2019s other recent hotspot installations throughout the San Diego region and across the nation, Sam Attish, vice president of business development and public affairs for Cox Communications in California, pointed to the potential visibility of the events as the reason for the free Wi-Fi initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mayor and city share our commitment to keeping San Diego a hub of innovation and technology, and what better way to celebrate than by enabling the public to utilize the technology to stay connected during these marquee events,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kerri Verbeke Kapich, senior vice president of marketing and strategic partnerships for the San Diego Tourism Authority, noted that last year, 4.4 million visitors came to San Diego and spent $1.2 billion. The month of July, because of its events, is the most popular month for travel to the region, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the two global events, all eyes will be on San Diego and people will be visiting San Diego looking to share memories and talk to people around the world about their great experiences,\u201d Kapich said. \u201cFree Wi-Fi will make it easier for them to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of Cox Communication\u2019s San Diego high speed internet customers already have access \u2014 through their preferred, premier, ultimate or \u201cG1GABLAST\u201d packages \u2014 to nearly 100 Cox hotspots currently installed around the county, which are part of a nationwide network of more than 400,000 hotspots.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10440\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_4150web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10440 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/IMG_4150web.jpg\" alt=\"Cox Communication employee installs a WiFi hotspot in Little Italy. (Courtesy Cox Communications)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cox also recently added 40 new Wi-Fi hotspots on board the USS Midway Museum, one of the city\u2019s most popular landmarks, which attracts more than 1.3 million visitors per year. It also expanded to 153 its number of Wi-Fi hotspots in Balboa Park, accommodating its millions of annual visitors.<\/p>\n<p>To accommodate the influx of visitors to San Diego during the All Star Game and Comic-Con, Cox\u2019s free Wi-Fi will be available in all Downtown neighborhoods from July 8 \u2013 24; including the Gaslamp Quarter, East Village, the Marina District, Little Italy, Cortez Hill and Core.<\/p>\n<p>Those who already subscribe to Cox\u2019s preferred packages listed above will automatically have access to the expanded hotspots Downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Cox customers who don\u2019t subscribe to one of the high speed plans listed above, or those who do not subscribe to Cox at all, may access the free Wi-Fi hotspots starting July 8 by selecting \u201cCoxWiFiFree\u201d on their wireless enabled devices when in range of a Cox hotspot.<\/p>\n<p>Para m\u00e1s informaci\u00f3n visite <a href=\"http:\/\/cox.com\/wifi\">cox.com\/wifi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014Editor Morgan M.
