{"id":238201,"date":"2016-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-01T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/assessing-the-year-in-theater\/"},"modified":"2016-01-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-01T08:00:00","slug":"assessing-the-year-in-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/assessing-the-year-in-theater\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessing the year in theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por Charlene Baldridge<\/p>\n<p>Theatrically, it\u2019s time to take a look back upon the year 2015, name a few favorite productions here in San Diego County, and take a look forward into 2016, finding what looks worthwhile and perhaps taking some time to fret over what seems troubling.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Please be aware that although I see most everything (I attended 115 theatrical productions, musicals, concerts and operas in town this year, not counting at least 10 Fringe Festival shows), there are some things I missed because scheduling is sometimes impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I found to be <strong>excellent<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Marsha Norman\u2019s <strong>\u201c\u2018night Mother,\u201d<\/strong> at ion theatre company, so good I paid to see it again as skillfully directed by Glenn Paris and starring Sylvia M\u2019Lafi Thompson as the mother of a daughter hell-bent on suicide, played by Yolanda Franklin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9437\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/SOTP_FullCast_1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9437\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9437 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/SOTP_FullCast_1.jpg\" alt=\"SOTP_FullCast_1\" width=\"600\" height=\"444\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/444;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The entire cast of the tragic &#8220;Sons of the Prophet&#8221; at Cygnet last January. (Photo by Daren Scott)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stephen Karam\u2019s 2011 off-Broadway hit, <strong>\u201cSons of the Prophet,\u201d<\/strong> at Cygnet in January, directed by then-new associate artistic director, Rob Lutfy. It was a touching, wildly inscrutable, deeply comic play about a Pennsylvania man of Lebanese descent confined to a wheelchair by an undiagnosed illness, brilliantly played by newcomer Alex Hoeffler. The pace was 1,000 mph and the play chock-full of challenging characters, who repeatedly missed out on love.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9434\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9434\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/17848397973_340d1ce36a_o.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9434\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9434 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/17848397973_340d1ce36a_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"17848397973_340d1ce36a_o\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9434\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jenn Colella as a flight captain with the cast of La Jolla Playhouse&#8217;s \u201cCome From Away\u201d in June. (Photo by Kevin Berne)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By far the most outstanding new musical of the year was La Jolla Playhouse\u2019s world premiere of <strong>\u201cCome From Away,\u201d<\/strong> in which a huge ensemble company told the story of the planes and people that were forced to land in Newfoundland on 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>A truly ravishing visual experience was the Old Globe\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/the-artistry-of-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cIn Your Arms,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> a dance musical with vignettes written by 10 major playwrights, directed and choreographed Christopher Gattelli. Best musical revival was San Diego Musical Theatre\u2019s <strong>\u201cLa Cage Aux Folles\u201d <\/strong>with endearing performances by Robert Townsend, David Engel and James Vasquez.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9435\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9435\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/In_Your_Arms10_print.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9435\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9435 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/In_Your_Arms10_print.jpg\" alt=\"In_Your_Arms10_print\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/414;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A scene from \u201cIn Your Arms\u201d (Photo by Carol Rosegg)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I adored Jeanine Tesori\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/beauty-is-only-skin-deep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cViolet,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> sensitively directed by San Diego Repertory Artistic Director Sam Woodhouse.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9436\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/REP-7409-Violet-L-R-Jacob-Caltrider-Rhett-George-Hannah-Corrigan-credit-Daren-Scott.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9436\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9436 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/REP-7409-Violet-L-R-Jacob-Caltrider-Rhett-George-Hannah-Corrigan-credit-Daren-Scott-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"REP-7409-Violet-L-R-Jacob-Caltrider-Rhett-George-Hannah-Corrigan-credit-Daren-Scott\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cast of San Diego REP&#8217;s &#8220;Violet&#8221; in September (Photo by Daren Scott)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other laudable productions: <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/an-amazing-chunk-of-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe Twenty-Seventh Man,\u201d<\/a> Old Globe Theatre; \u201cOedipus El Rey,\u201d San Diego Repertory Theatre; \u201cFreud\u2019s Last Session\u201d with Francis Gercke and Robert Smyth at Lamb\u2019s Players Theatre; \u201cA New Brain,\u201d with Tom Zohar and his real-life husband Anthony Methvin, directed by Kim Strassburger at Diversionary Theatre; \u201cHealing Wars,\u201d La Jolla Playhouse; \u201cThe Quality of Life,\u201d produced by Intrepid Theatre at the old Carlsbad Cinema; and \u201cThe Vortex\u201d and \u201cHay Fever\u201d in repertory at Cygnet.<\/p>\n<p>And just for fun: \u201cReturn to the Forbidden Planet\u201d at New Village Arts and \u201cSilence of the Clams\u201d at Diversionary; and \u201cThe (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence\u201d at Moxie Theatre; and \u201cChapatti\u201d at North Coast Repertory Theatre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intrepid Theatre Company<\/strong> is certainly the outstanding theater company of the year, having engendered the two most indelible performances of the year \u2014 Jeffrey Jones as the dying protagonist in \u201cThe Quality of Life,\u201d and Eileen Bowman as Judy Garland in \u201cEnd of the Rainbow,\u201d at San Diego Rep. Both shows were directed by Christy Yael-Cox, who built wonderful supporting ensembles for each.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good news and worrisome news for 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The re-enlivened InnerMission Theatre produced two fine shows in Diversionary Theatre\u2019s new Black Box.<\/p>\n<p>In worrisome news, Mo\u2019olelo \u201clost\u201d its newish artistic director, Lydia Fort, and more recently announced postponement of the remainder of the season. A pity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch for these two new promising play festivals <\/strong>in January and February. The first, the <strong>Old Globe\u2019s New Voices Festival<\/strong>, Jan. 15 \u201317, with readings as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15: Sheri Wilner, Julia Jordan, and Adam Gwon\u2019s musical, \u201cCake Off\u201d<\/li>\n<li>4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16: Jiehae Park\u2019s \u201cpeerless,\u201d directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg<\/li>\n<li>7:30 p.m. Jan. 16: \u201cThe Blameless\u201d by Nick Gandiello, directed by Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein;<\/li>\n<li>4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17: Mona Mansour\u2019s \u201cUnseen,\u201d directed by Johanna McKeon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All four readings take place in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. Tickets are free but require reservations, open to the general public beginning Tuesday, Jan. 5 at noon, through the box office at 619-23-GLOBE.<\/p>\n<p>For the second,<strong> La Jolla Playhouse<\/strong> received a $20,000 NEA grant to enhance this year\u2019s <strong>DNA New Work Series<\/strong>, which takes place Feb. 15 \u2013 27.<\/p>\n<p>Plays will be announced in early January. Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/broadwaysd.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broadwaysd.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Old Globe: David Ives adaptation of the 18th century French farce, \u201cMetromaniacs,\u201d directed by legendary director Michael Kahn, Shiley Stage Jan. 30 \u2013 March 6.
