{"id":237893,"date":"2015-09-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-04T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/blending-art-and-music\/"},"modified":"2015-09-04T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-09-04T07:00:00","slug":"blending-art-and-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/blending-art-and-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Fusionando arte y m\u00fasica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por Kai Oliver-Kurtin<\/p>\n<p>As part of Balboa Park\u2019s centennial celebration of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) will hold the largest exhibit in the museum\u2019s recent history, titled \u201cThe Art of Music,\u201d from Sept. 26 \u2013 Feb. 7, 2016.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To parallel the Exposition\u2019s yearlong celebration of music a century ago that included live performances nearly every day, SDMA kicked off a concert series in January that will continue throughout 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The SDMA hopes to bring upwards of 100,000 people to the museum to view the exhibit, which features more than 200 objects divided among three sections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not chronological, it\u2019s organized by theme,\u201d said Anita Feldman, deputy director of curatorial affairs. \u201cThe first section examines the symbolic nature of musicians portrayed in popular works, the second illustrates the social ramifications of music and art, and the third shows how musical sounds influence the color and shape of visual artwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8730\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8730\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2-23-Hans-Burkhardt2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8730 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2-23-Hans-Burkhardt2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hans Burkhardt, \u201cSex Pistols,\u201d 1981. Oil on canvas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Four internal curators were charged with organizing the exhibit because of its size and complexity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery curator is an expert in their own field,\u201d said Feldman. \u201cEveryone put their expertise together to create a really vast body of work, looking at the affinity between music and visual art that goes across different cultures and periods in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though the show contains works from all over the world, it opens with a large-scale piece by local San Diego artist John Baldessari, titled \u201cBeethoven\u2019s Trumpet (with Ear).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a complicated installation that takes up the entire east wing of the museum downstairs,\u201d Feldman said. \u201cBut it\u2019s really about the variety of the material \u2014 containing video and sound installations, musical instruments, and the concert series.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit was selected by an international team of curators to also include paintings, sculptures, photographs, and musical artifacts such as the original manuscript from Ludwig Van Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No. 9. Works from legendary artists Salvador Dal\u00ed, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso will be showcased. The exhibit catalogue contains more than 350 pages of in-depth essays from curators, art historians, musicologists, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Soon the SDMA will be launching its own mobile app just in time for \u201cThe Art of Music,\u201d which will serve as a reference guide to the museum\u2019s various collections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe show will be really interactive,\u201d Feldman said. \u201cA number of musical instruments have speakers that will respond to the fact that you\u2019re there, and will show you what the instrument sounds like as you approach it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8732\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/17-Hammer-Baldessari-Person-with-Red-Guitarweb.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8732 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/17-Hammer-Baldessari-Person-with-Red-Guitarweb-300x246.jpg\" alt=\"John Baldessari, \u201cPerson with Guitar (Red),\u201d 2005. Five-color screen print construction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A guided audio tour is also available for guests as they navigate the exhibit, with audio clips for about 20 of the works.<\/p>\n<p>Other corresponding programs include one of SDMA\u2019s signature Culture &amp; Cocktails events on Nov. 5, a scholarly symposium on Nov. 7, and occasional musical ArtStops and Family Drop-In Days with performances by members of the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory\u2019s Community Opus Project.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing concert series takes place on the third Thursday of each month, held in the museum galleries, the James S. Copley Auditorium, and the Plaza de Panama.
