{"id":237709,"date":"2015-06-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/exploring-balboa-park-june-2015\/"},"modified":"2015-06-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T07:00:00","slug":"exploring-balboa-park-june-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/exploring-balboa-park-june-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Balboa Park June 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por Johnny McDonald<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twilight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The traditional summer Twilight in the Park concerts\u00a0will have a Centennial twist this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have special Centennial events planned around some of the concerts,\u201d\u00a0said Mike Waggener, who established the first Twilight shows 35 years ago.\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019ll begin an hour before the 6:30 p.m. concert each night.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6505\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Johnny-McDonaldweb.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6505 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Johnny-McDonaldweb.jpg\" alt=\"Johnny McDonald\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 233px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 233\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">johnny mcdonald<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe want people to come earlier to be entertained by roving barbershop quartets, dancers and even\u00a0antique cars,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople can get into the atmosphere of 1915, even be taught dance steps of that period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the concerts, he\u2019s noticed a change in audiences over the past years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore young families with children are filling the 2,500 seats,\u201d he said. \u201cBefore, they were mostly senior citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the few places where the kids can hop around in the back or on the sides during these concerts,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe have room up front so people can dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Appropriately, the San Diego Marine Corps Concert band will play on opening night, June 16. The shows are scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights through Aug. 27.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the Marines participated in the 1915 Fair and were headquartered in the Park\u2019s buildings until MCRD opened in 1924.<\/p>\n<p>Bayou Brothers and\u00a0Hillcrest Wind Ensemble will perform the next two nights.<\/p>\n<p>Waggener said the mid-week days were selected so as not to interfere with other events going on at the Park and these had \u201cthe least chance,\u201d of doing so. He also said the volunteers are responsible for keeping the series alive for so long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t depend on grants and things like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A few of the other musical performers will be Real Jazz Big Band, Grupo Relax TJ, Dixie Express, Coronado Big Band and The Legends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elsewhere in the Park <\/strong>\u2014 During spring break in March, San Diego State students Derek Abbey. Jade Dadiz, Jacob Jiron and Olivia Chavez, joined the BentProp Project team in Palau to search for WWII remains and artifacts. Their findings will be exhibited at the <strong>Veterans Museum<\/strong> on June 24 at 6:30 p.m. The BentProp Project, once featured on CBS\u2019 \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d is a nonprofit group that conducts year-round research in support of the annual spring missions to Palau.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, the Museum has received numerous WWII medals, books, uniforms, certificates, ship model, photographs and other artifacts from 12 donors &#8230; <strong>The San Diego Zoo<\/strong> has more than 700,000 plants in its accredited botanical collection including over 900 different types of orchids. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of opportunity for guests to learn and gain knowledge they can put to use in their own backyard gardens,\u201d said Dan Simpson, horticulture manager.\u00a0\u201cAt various spots on Zoo grounds, guests can visit interesting booths and learn about things like what makes up good soil and compost at the \u2018can you dig it\u2019 booth\u201d \u2026 <strong>San Diego Junior Theatre\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cCharlotte\u2019s Web.\u201d E.
