{"id":237678,"date":"2015-05-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-01T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/spinning-for-charity\/"},"modified":"2015-05-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-01T07:00:00","slug":"spinning-for-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/spinning-for-charity\/","title":{"rendered":"Spinning for charity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fluxx patrons \u2018spin\u2019 around dance floor for upcoming event<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>por Alex Owens<\/p>\n<p>Nightclubs commonly spin discs, but Fluxx is attempting to spin in a different way \u2014 with a spin class on the dance floor.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On May 16, the Downtown nightclub will host Fluxx Spin between noon \u2013 5 p.m. where instead of dancing, patrons will ride one of 44 spin cycles that will be set up in the space.<\/p>\n<p>Fluxx Spin is being held as a partnership with SparkCycle, a La Jolla-based spin-cycle facility.<\/p>\n<p>SparkCycle owner Stephanie Cochrane believes the event is groundbreaking in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been checking the Internet and I don\u2019t believe there has been an event like this before at a nightclub,\u201d Cochrane said. \u201cTo be fair, we have a club-like vibe already so it\u2019s a good fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7947\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7947\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Laser-2web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7947 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Laser-2web.jpg\" alt=\"Fluxx will host a fundraiser May 16 (Courtesy Fluxx)\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/406;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fluxx will host a fundraiser May 16 (Courtesy Fluxx)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation Operation Rebound, a charity that helps American military personnel, veterans and first responders facing physical challenges to still engage in sports and fitness activities.<\/p>\n<p>The charity is near and dear to Fluxx bar manager JP Rankin, who cooked up the event with Cochrane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was born and raised in Coronado, so the military and the Navy are close to my heart,\u201d Rankin said. \u201cAny opportunity to help them is a no-brainer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrons have the choice of paying $80 for one of two spin classes that will be held during the event or paying $20 to just enjoy the club-like atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to use every tool at our disposal,\u201d Rankin promised. \u201cThe million-dollar sound system, the lasers and the LED lights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rankin is a regular at SparkCycle, and has been thinking about combining clubbing and spinning for a while.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people at SparkCycle do what they can to make you forget you\u2019re exercising,\u201d he said, adding that there are many similarities between the type of music that is good for spinning and the type that is great for clubbing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything with a high amount of beats-per-minute works,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I started, the teacher had us ride to the beat so everyone\u2019s right foot is with the bass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like a club in other ways, according to Cochrane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who are spinning like to lose themselves in the moment,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re not focused on miles, calories or RPMs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are big differences, and not just because of the bikes. Although cocktails will be available at the event, people who are planning to spin will be discouraged from drinking booze beforehand and alcoholic beverages won\u2019t be allowed on the SpinCycles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can have a mimosa afterwards,\u201d Cochrane suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Cochrane believes that the people who spin at Fluxx Spin may approach the event differently than they would a normal workout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the dress will be more risqu\u00e9,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019ll see a lot of booty shorts and sports bras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If successful, both Rankin and Cochrane would like to continue putting a new spin on the club experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it takes off, we\u2019d find a way to make it work in the schedule,\u201d Rankin said. \u201cBut, right now, I think the best way to do it is semi-annually and do it for a charity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fluxx is located at 500 Fourth Ave., Downtown.
