{"id":237505,"date":"2015-02-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-06T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/the-future-of-entertainment\/"},"modified":"2015-02-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-06T08:00:00","slug":"the-future-of-entertainment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/the-future-of-entertainment\/","title":{"rendered":"The future of entertainment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Marvel Experience swings into San Diego<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alex Owens | Contributor<\/p>\n<p>Waiting 51 weeks each year for Comic-Con can make a San Diego comic geek suffer withdrawal symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>This year, there is help in the form of The Marvel Experience, a state-of-the-art touring show that will be at the Del Mar Fairgrounds starting Feb. 7.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Marvel Experience is a walk-through exhibit that features a thrilling motion ride, the world\u2019s only 360-degree Stereoscopic 3D Dome, and a wide range of technologically advanced interactive and immersive elements, all centered around popular Marvel Comics heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine and the Incredible Hulk.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7300\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7300\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_9950web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7300 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_9950web.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9950web\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/433;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Though made with adults in mind, The Marvel Experience can still be enjoyed by children. <br \/>(Courtesy Marvel Experience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The show\u2019s concept is that all attendees are attempting to become Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the intelligence agency in the backdrop of Marvel Comics series like The Avengers and Captain America.<\/p>\n<p>The training includes a chance swing with Spider-Man, smashing things with the Hulk, and flying with Iron Man in preparation for an epic battle against an army of evil adaptoids with your favorite superheroes.<\/p>\n<p>The Marvel Experience is the brainchild of Rick Licht, a former sports agent and lifelong comic geek, who said this project has been 20 years in the making.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the Fan Fest at the Baseball All-Star game, where 130,000 people attended in a weekend at $30 a pop, and also the NFL Experience before the Super Bowl,\u201d he said. \u201cThey both attracted the same amount of people no matter where they were, so I decided to take the idea from sports and adapt to entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marvel Comics has been on a roll in the last three years thanks to the success of the \u201cIron Man\u201d trilogy, \u201cThe Avengers\u201d film, and the \u201cThor\u201d and \u201cCaptain America\u201d series, but Licht says the project was in the works before those films hit it big.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were slightly ahead of the Marvel curve,\u201d Licht said. \u201cWe got permission to use the characters about nine or 10 months before \u2018The Avengers\u2019 came out. But these characters have all been around since 1960 so they are familiar to generations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7299\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/089web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7299 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/089web.jpg\" alt=\"089web\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/433;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Courtesy Marvel Experience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, we didn\u2019t build it for kids,\u201d he said. \u201cWe wanted a storyline that would resonate with people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s \u2014 people who know who Lou Ferrigno is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Diego marks the third city of The Marvel Experience tour, but Licht feels the city\u2019s Comic-Con makes it an important one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in San Diego understand the relevance of this, plus the city is headquarters to a lot of comic book companies,\u201d Licht said. \u201cWe purposely didn\u2019t want to set up during Comic-Con because we didn\u2019t want take away the attention from the Con.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Licht has personal affection for the city as well, since one of his clients was former Padre great Ken Caminiti, who led the Padres to two playoff appearances before dying tragically in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Licht expects word-of-mouth will attract a lot of business after The Marvel Experience opens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople will tell their friends about how they participated in a 3D shooting gallery with 24 other people or how they were battling and they saw Wolverine to their left, Black Widow to their right with Captain America behind him \u2014 in 3D without glasses!\u201d he said. \u201cMost of the world hasn\u2019t seen this technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Licht believes The Marvel Experience could be the future of entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe interactivity makes it a natural progression from Broadway, circuses or ice shows,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want it to be a spectacle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Licht said he and his partners could have filled the seven massive domes that make up the show with a bunch of elements that weren\u2019t really connected, but he chose to follow the advice from Stan Lee, the man who created many of the great Marvel characters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tell a story with ups and downs and drama,\u201d he said. \u201cHopefully, the good guys save the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Take a date and save the world this Valentine\u2019s Day.
