Spreckels to house work crews for the Southern Pacific Railroad, while rail lines were being laid to connect Arizona with Southern California.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A wealthy sugar magnate, Spreckels was a multimillionaire and reportedly the wealthiest man in San Diego. Wright applied and eventually the company hired him to draw architectural details for\u00a0bungalows. He soon realized his talent for architecture and ultimately secured a position with the firm of Harrison Albright, one of the\u00a0pre-eminent architects in\u00a0Los Angeles. Albright gave Wright the opportunity to design the Golden West Hotel, working closely with sculptor\u00a0Alfonso Iannelli, an Italian-American sculptor, artist, and industrial designer, whose influence can be seen on the sculptural details of the building.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screen-Shot-2015-02-05-at-4.15.42-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7335 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screen-Shot-2015-02-05-at-4.15.42-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-02-05 at 4.15.42 PM\" width=\"251\" height=\"156\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 251px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 251\/156;\" \/><\/a>A visit to the hotel\u2019s lobby reveals a window into the past, with original craftsman oak furniture, tile floors, and registration desk.
