{"id":236533,"date":"2013-10-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-08T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/urban-sweets\/"},"modified":"2013-10-08T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2013-10-08T07:00:00","slug":"urban-sweets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/urban-sweets\/","title":{"rendered":"Urban Sweets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Trick-or-treating comes to Little Italy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alex Owens | Downtown News<\/p>\n<p>Halloween is coming a few days early in Little Italy \u2013 and that\u2019s no trick.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 25, the Little Italy Association (LIA) is hosting \u201cTrick or Treat on India Street,\u201d an event designed for the kids who live in the neighborhood, including those who live in East Village, Cortez Hill and other nearby areas.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the lucky 13th year of the event, which is designed to ensure that Downtown\u2019s rugrats all get a chance to nab candy from their neighbors and participating businesses.<\/p>\n<p>But the event holds greater meaning than just an excuse to dress up and get a sugar high, according to Chris Gomez, district manager of the LIA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur intent is make a fun event for families who choose to live in urban neighborhoods like Little Italy,\u201d Gomez said. \u201cYou can live in a condo and still raise kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the perception that Little Italy, the Gaslamp and East Village are populated by single professionals or empty-nesting oldsters, Gomez said that more and more people are choosing to raise their kids in the city center, as opposed to moving to more residential areas when the kids are old enough to go to school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 15 to 20 percent of people in Little Italy have kids, but the demographic is diverse,\u201d Gomez said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4384\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4384\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/LI_Halloween-web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4384 lazyload\" alt=\"Children dressed up for last year's Trick or Treat on India Street. (Courtesy Little India Association)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As neighborhood redevelopment continues, he expects the number of kids in the area to increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family component is key to Little Italy,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have Washington Elementary there and a play area attached. When the Embarcadero Park is built, that will increase the attractiveness to families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Little Italy has always had more kids than other areas of Downtown, Gomez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really are more of a neighborhood than an entertainment area,\u201d he said. \u201cWe still have single family dwellings and all the new developments have to have some moderate and low-income housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Events like Trick or Treat on India Street are meant to enhance the neighborhood feeling to the area.<\/p>\n<p>The trick-or-treating will take place between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the local businesses and storefronts.
