But young impressionable children know the place well.<\/p>\n<p>Front rows in the 262-seat theater are reserved for the 2, 3, and 4 year olds.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Hitchcock, for whom the theater is named, began there in 1947 with her marionettes and continued performing almost up to her death in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Joe Fitzpatrick, a former educator and entertainer\u00a0from Manhattan, continues the legacy as manager\/board president and one of several talented puppeteers. Their midday performances are Wednesday through Sunday and the puppets used vary by performance, and include full stage marionettes, \u201cmuppet\u201d style and hand puppets.<\/p>\n<p>This month you can bring the kids to see Millie Patterson\u2019s string puppets performing in \u201cSomething\u2019s Fishy,\u201d Aug. 7-11 and 14-18. You can also catch Fitzpatrick\u2019s Big Joe Productions\u2019 hand puppet show, \u201cKing Midas: The Golden Touch,\u201d from Aug 21-25.<\/p>\n<p>The Puppet Theater was originally part of a single, large unit erected for the 1935-36 Exposition. (Courtesy Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fitzpatrick is a busy guy, if he\u2019s not on stage \u2013 and that\u2019s several times a year \u2013 he\u2019s sweeping out the place, painting sets, posting changes of upcoming attractions, and marketing and publishing their newsletter, all things he\u2019s done for 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>Other performers include Enid Bartnicki, Eva Kvaas, Millie Patterson, Gaston Morineau, Julie Otto and a nationally acclaimed 14-year-old youngster, named Zachary Crook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZachary, who has been with us since he was 8, received a scholarship to the National Convention of Puppeteers in Atlanta last year,\u201d Fitzpatrick said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatterson performed as a mine in San Francisco, Gaston\u00a0is a teacher in South Bay and is our best puppet maker,\u201d he continued. \u201cOtto likes to do big life-sized puppets and Kvaas is from the Peter Kid\u2019s workshop. Crook, who has three shows this summer, has\u00a0taken classes in Los Angeles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of Connecticut at one time was the only school where you could get a degree in puppetry, but Fitzpatrick said now there are numerous schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I hear someone say they came here as a child and now they\u2019re bringing their children, that makes my heart sing,\u201d Fitzpatrick said.<\/p>\n<p>Does anyone still do Punch and Judy, I wondered? (Photo by Linda Hite)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not so, says current Executive Director Paula Brandes, pointing out the educational features and the three yearly floor changes that comply with visitors\u2019 wishes.<\/p>\n<p>They recently featured the Latino cultural modifications with low riders, currently the attraction is car toys and soon they will honor the 60th anniversary of GM\u2019s Corvette, starting Oct. 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely something for everyone with car toys,\u201d Brandes said. \u201cWe have pedal cars, a junior dragster, Soap Box Derby cars (featuring San Diego&#8217;s Derby racing legend, Gil Klecan), bumper cars made street legal and all sorts of bikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Research Director] Kenn Colclasure is the point of contact for most of this and works with exhibitors to acquire what we need [vehicles, memorabilia, etc.],\u201d she said. \u201cHe also writes the narratives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more info visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www. sdautomuseum.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sdautomuseum.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Elsewhere around the Park<\/b> \u2013 Old Globe <b>Artistic Director Barry Edelstein\u2019s<\/b> 90-minute presentation exploring the language of <b>Shakespeare<\/b> this past June was so successful, he\u2019s rescheduled another on\u00a0 Aug. 10 starting at 11 a.m. It\u2019s a how-to guide for student actors, directors and anyone who wants to feel more comfortable with the Bard &#8230; <b>Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age<\/b> will put these local fossils into a broader historical context at the <b>Natural History Museum<\/b> that includes global climate changes and dramatic pulses of extinction.
