Hurley | Downtown Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The New Year kicked off harmoniously this year at City Hall, as Mayor Bob Filner welcomed an exhibition of color prints from the late, world-renown artist, Sri Chinmoy on Wednesday, Jan. 2.<\/p>\n<p>Called \u201cPaintings for World Harmony,\u201d the 22 prints are duplicates of a similar exhibition of Chinmoy\u2019s real paintings that have been on display at the United Nations, the Louvre and other galleries around the world. The prints will be on exhibition through Jan. 16.<a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/world-harmony-comes-to-city-hall\/xm1_3692-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2196\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2196 lazyload\" title=\"XM1_3692 web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/XM1_3692-web-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Ms. Ranjana Ghose, curator of Chinmoy's vast art collection, shares his vision. (Photo by Bijoy Imhof)\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/199;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Born in Bengal, India, Chinmoy spent much of his adult life in New York City, and over his life painted over 140,000 works of art dedicated to fostering peace and harmony around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the paintings are inscribed with messages such as \u2018hope,\u2019 \u2018world harmony,\u2019 \u2018dream\u2019 \u2026 and other inspiring phrases that the artist utilized to convey a climate of peace,\u201d said a press release. \u201cThe viewer is drawn into a world far from the stress induced environment that surrounds our day to day lives and is embraced by a brilliant display of creative inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Ranjana Ghose, curator of Chinmoy\u2019s huge catalog of art, spoke at length at the ceremony, offering insight to the artist, his dream for peace, his art work, and also named a large number of well known supporters of both his art and his wish to instill peace around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Chinmoy is also known for founding the World Harmony Run in 1987, which, according to its website, is the \u201cworld\u2019s largest global torch relay,\u201d and that it seeks \u201cto strengthen international friendship and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2199\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/world-harmony-comes-to-city-hall\/xm1_3720-salil-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2199\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2199 lazyload\" title=\"XM1_3720 Salil web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/XM1_3720-Salil-web-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"World Harmony comes to City Hall\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 199px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 199\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salil Wilson, executive director of Chinmoy&#8217;s World Harmony Run, prepares to present Mayor Filner with the Torch Bearer Award. (Photo by Bijoy Imhof)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the relay, participants from all over the world pass a flaming torch from hand to hand as a symbol of harmony, while running through over 100 nations around the globe, including the 48 contiguous United States.\u00a0 The relay rotates back to the United States every two years and is currently next scheduled to pass through San Diego in June of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Runners from more than a dozen countries were present at the exhibition opening, greeting Mayor Filner individually at the microphone and stating which country they represented.<\/p>\n<p>Filner was then presented with a \u201cTorch Bearer Award\u201d by Salil Wilson, executive director of the World Harmony Run. The mayor began his remarks by greeting the overflowing crowd in several languages, which was met by cheers in the audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for bringing this incredible exhibition of Sri Chinmoy\u2019s beautiful artworks to us,\u201d Mayor Filner said at the event. \u201cThe prospect for world peace and world harmony come from individuals \u2026 we all have to feel in our minds, our hearts and our souls to work for these goals.
