More than 1,300 fans, performers, media and industry professionals gathered under the stars to celebrate one of San Diego\u2019s biggest music nights of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its twenty-second year, the three-hour annual event featured over 200 local acts competing in 27 different categories, along with live performances by P.O.D., Unwritten Law, Dead Feather Moon, Euphoria Brass Band, Hills Like Elephants, Hyena, Mattson 2, and The Howls.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1330\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1330\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/local-music-awards-honor-courage-and-other-achievements\/candye-kane-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1330\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1330 lazyload\" title=\"Candye Kane web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candye-Kane-web-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Local music awards honor courage and other achievements\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 199px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 199\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Local singer-songwriter Candye Kane accepts her Courage in Music Award. (Photo by Manny Lopez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Grammy award winners Switchfoot, who did not attend the show, won the evening\u2019s top honor for Artist of the Year. Fresh off of a performance at Lollapalooza 2012, Delta Spirit, who also did not attend, took the trophies for Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Getting the nod for Best New Artist was Hills like Elephants, whose debut album \u201cThe Endless Charade\u201d was released in February.<\/p>\n<p>A special Courage in Music award was given to Blues singer, musician, playwright, activist and former adult star Candye Kane, who has been battling pancreatic cancer since 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Kane, whose gritty lyrics convey humor, strength and optimism, returned home to San Diego from a 26-city tour just for the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all courageous for standing up when it really matters,\u201d Kane said during her acceptance speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a responsibility as writers to be honest, write about what we know and work to inspire others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Known as one of the finest jazz pianists over the past 50 years, Mike Wofford received the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented by his old friend and legendary saxophonist, Daniel Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>Before handing him the award, Jackson stated that Wofford has always maintained the jazz tradition and never let technology interfere with the music.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1332\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1332\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/local-music-awards-honor-courage-and-other-achievements\/wofford-jackson-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1332\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1332 lazyload\" title=\"Wofford Jackson web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Wofford-Jackson-web-300x288.jpg\" alt=\"Local music awards honor courage and other achievements\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/288;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan Jackson presents Mike Wofford with the Lifetime Achievement Award. (Photo by Manny Lopez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Proceeds from the event benefitted the Taylor Guitars for Schools program run by the San Diego Music Foundation, a local non-profit that also organizes the music awards. According to its founder Kevin Hellman, the program has distributed guitars to over 35,000 students in public elementary schools throughout San Diego County since 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, a recipient of the Best Jazz artist award three times since 1995, along with Jazz Album of the Year in 2009, said that it\u2019s always an honor to be nominated for the SDMAs, but that beyond trophies and accolades, the event is a once yearly opportunity for him to reconnect with long-time friends he might otherwise never see.<\/p>\n<p>Broadcast journalist Perette Godwin, who has been involved with the awards show as a presenter for the past five years, said the event is an opportunity to recognize the people that make music in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very close knit community,\u201d Godwin said. \u201cWhether they\u2019re in their seats or in the back, everyone\u2019s here having a good time, raising money for a good cause and catching up with old friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1333\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1333\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/local-music-awards-honor-courage-and-other-achievements\/p-o-d-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1333\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1333 lazyload\" title=\"P.O.D. web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/P.O.D.-web-300x273.jpg\" alt=\"Local music awards honor courage and other achievements\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/273;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sonny Sandoval, of San Diego-based band P.O.D., performs at the SDMAs. (Photo by Manny Lopez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hellman described the award ceremony as part award show and part music industry confab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve ever been to the SDMA\u2019s you would know that most of the people are hanging out in the back talking with friends that they haven\u2019t seen in a long-time, because everyone\u2019s busy doing shows and touring,\u201d Hellman said. \u201cThis is the one time a year that all of these people in the music industry are all in one place together.
