Bright yellow, fuchsia, and cobalt blue colors were popular.<\/p>\n<p>Long dresses with sandals are a big trend along with asymmetrical dresses that have longer hems in the back. \u00a0Tina Carreras at Style Spies styled all the segments.<\/p>\n<p>The Fashions were accented by jewelry from Ear Candy by Corinne Marie.\u00a0 These Gaslamp stores said they were preparing customers for the much-anticipated Opening Day at the Races.\u00a0 To see these fashions up close visit Eden at 520 5th\u00a0Avenue and Bubbles Boutique at 226 5th\u00a0Avenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>75-Year Anniversary of \u201cAway They Go\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 75th\u00a0year of Opening Day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club went off on July 18 in a flurry of horses and hats for a record crowd of 47,339.\u00a0 To celebrate the 75th\u00a0Anniversary, a new face was used for the ad campaign featuring model, actress, and world top jockey Chantal Sutherland.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1183\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/fashion-files-2\/diana-evva-lena-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1183\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1183 lazyload\" title=\"Diana  Evva  Lena web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Diana-Evva-Lena-web-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Fashion Files\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/219;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hat designer and Fashion Files columnist Diana Cavagnaro (left), Evva Fenison, and Burnham House owner Lena Evans on Del Mar&#8217;s Opening Day. (Photo courtesy Diana Cavagnaro)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The campaign chose a fashion photographer to show off the old and new by photographing pinups through the ages.\u00a0 Sutherland did not disappoint her fans and started the day with a victory on the filly California Girl.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hats are always neck-and-neck in popularity with the horses on Opening Day. There seems to be a split with women between wearing large brim hats and the smaller fascinators.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Bader from the Del Mar Hat Company said that her customers wanted the larger headpieces or the smaller saucer style this year.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the racy highlights were Jenny Craig wearing a chapeau from Fleur de Paris in New Orleans, Valerie Cooper in beautiful Philip Treacy, and Denise Hug and Linda Swortwood in hats from Portugal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1184\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/fashion-files-2\/cover-alexis-delchiaro-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1184\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1184 lazyload\" title=\"Cover - Alexis DelChiaro web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Cover-Alexis-DelChiaro-web-178x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fashion Files\" width=\"178\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 178px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 178\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KUSI Anchor Alexis DelChiaro wearing Designer Millinery Hat (Photo by Diana Cavagnaro)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lena Evans, Evva Fenison, Alexis DelChiaro &amp; Leslie Lopez from KUSI, and Raha Sheik from FOX 5 were all wearing Designer Millinery hats.\u00a0 Emma Zuckerman looked luscious in a yellow Chanel dress and hat by Ilda DiVico and Lee Goldberg was smart in a Zang Toi suit and chapeau by Philip Treacy.\u00a0 Bo Derek looked radiant sporting a fedora, which many men and women opted to wear this year. <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The One &amp; Only Truly Fabulous Hat Contest attracted more people to this 18th year edition.\u00a0 Studio Savvy sponsored the contest and this year a new category called, Best Fascinator was added, which went to Stefanie Gates.\u00a0 The other winners were the Funniest\/Most Outrageous \u2013 Meg Cavis; the Best Racing theme \u2013 Lori Shelton,; and Best Flowers \u2013 Emilee Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>The Bing Crosby Grand Prize and winner of the Most Glamorous category went to Daniella Lopez.\u00a0 Ms. Lopez received a check for $300, two airline tickets on American Airlines, and a $1,750 pearl necklace from the Diamond Boutique of Del Mar.<\/p>\n<p>The races continue daily, Wednesday through Sunday until September 5th.\u00a0 For more information and post times, visit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delmarracing.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delmarracing.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hats &amp; Headdresses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Mingei Museum is presenting an incredible exhibit on Hats &amp; Headdresses from their Permanent Collection.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1185\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1185\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/fashion-files-2\/thailand-20thc-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1185\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1185 lazyload\" title=\"Thailand 20thC web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Thailand-20thC-web-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fashion Files\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 210px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 210\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Headdress from 20th Century Thailand (Photo by Diana Cavagnaro)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These selections make up donations and purchases from the past 34 years.\u00a0 There are a wide variety of cultures and countries from around the world in this exhibition.\u00a0 The hats are used for a variety of reasons, which could be for protection, ornamentation, and some to ward off evil spirits.<\/p>\n<p>Hats &amp; Headdresses can portray status, what ethnic group you belong to, or they can be a fashion statement reflecting the wearer\u2019s personality.<\/p>\n<p>One of standout headdresses is from the Akha people of Thailand.\u00a0 They were originally from Tibet and wear these extraordinary headdresses to distinguish their age, marital status or social group.\u00a0 One of the striking caps from India is made with Turquoise, agate, coral, and brass. Many headdresses from South America were made with incredible macaw, parrot, and toucan feathers and were worn only by men.<\/p>\n<p>Another one of my favorites was a ceremonial Hat from Cameroon made with glass beads, cowry shells, and fiber.\u00a0 A Headdress from the Democratic Republic of the Congo stood out and was made with Kuba cloth, glass beads, wicker, raffia, cowry shells and leather.<\/p>\n<p>Pictures and lecture August 1 and then a fascinator workshop on August 25 because there is such a demand for the Kate Middleton look.\u00a0 This must see exhibit is currently ongoing and will be there through September 9.\u00a0 For more information visit the Mingei at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mingei.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mingei.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fashion Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss <strong>Hats &amp; Headdresses<\/strong> (see above) from cultures and countries around the world at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, through September 9.\u00a0 For information call: (619) 239-0003.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>August 7th<\/strong> \u2013 The Globe Guilders &amp; Neiman Marcus present Celebrating Couture 2012 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront featuring Monique Lhuillier\u2019s\u00a0Fall 2012 Collection.\u00a0 For tickets call Carol Hanson at (619) 229-2090.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 12th<\/strong> \u2013 Summer Bridal Bazaar with three fashion shows presented throughout the day from 10 a.m. \u2013 4 p.m. at the San Diego Convention Center.
