Co-presented by businesses and nonprofit organizations, this is the 14th annual festival highlighting movies for, by and about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.<\/p>\n<p>Festival Programmer Michael McQuiggan said FilmOut presents the entire community with \u201ca great five-day festival, with over 40 films \u2026 that generally will not play theatrically in San Diego.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calling the films important, relevant and entertaining, he said, \u201cWe are proud to continue to provide this film festival to our communities and hope that, as a collective, it is appreciated, embraced and supported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After opening Wednesday, May 30 with the Olympia Dukakis film \u201cCloudburst,\u201d FilmOut features another festival spotlight with the Saturday, June 2 screening of \u201cThat\u2019s What She Said,\u201d directed by Carrie Preston and starring Anne Heche and Marcia DeBonis. McQuiggan said they were proud to include Preston\u2019s comedy, which recently screened at the Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSundance was amazing,\u201d Preston said. \u201cIt\u2019s such a gift to have [a film\u2019s] world premiere at such a prestigious festival.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_776\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-776\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/filmout-brings-together-local-communities\/ann-heche-web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-776\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-776 lazyload\" title=\"Ann Heche web\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sandiegodowntownnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Ann-Heche-web-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"FilmOut brings together local communities\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/201;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anne Heche stars in Carrie Preston\u2019s \u201cThat\u2019s What She Said.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s What She Said\u201d was the first film Preston and her production company partners, local residents Mark Holmes and James Vasquez, have submitted for consideration to the Utah festival. The company, called Daisy 3 Pictures, was founded in 2004 and has produced three previous films.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe both realized at the same time that we wanted to enhance our acting careers with producing and directing,\u201d Preston said. The actress, who first began film in a supporting role as one of the Southern bridesmaid sisters in \u201cMy Best Friend\u2019s Wedding,\u201d is a current regular on the television series \u201cTrue Blood.\u201d Preston has had acting stints on stage, as well, rounding out her acting-producing-directing career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kind of want to do it all. I\u2019m greedy that way, because I like the work. I\u2019m one of those people who really loves to be busy,\u201d she said. \u201cIn the last couple of years, certainly since \u2018True Blood,\u2019 I\u2019ve been able to really focus on producing and directing in my off-time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Preston said \u201cThat\u2019s What She Said\u201d was her and writer Kelly Overbey\u2019s answer to the \u201cubiquitous bro-mance\u201d takeover in comedies. \u201cI wasn\u2019t seeing much of anything that really catered to females,\u201d she said, including in front of and behind the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis [movie] is something you don\u2019t see &#8212; women being messy and slobs and culpable and not always likeable \u2026 and yet, still funny,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was my mission, then, to make a film that would give that type of a woman a platform and a voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film comes on the heels of last year\u2019s \u201cBridesmaids,\u201d written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. Wiig and Mumolo were nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay, as was Melissa McCarthy for her supporting actress role. Preston said she was excited about the critical reception of \u201cBridesmaids,\u201d and likened \u201cThat\u2019s What She Said\u201d to the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything, it\u2019s the older, rock \u2018n\u2019 roll, heroin-addicted sister to \u2018Bridesmaids.\u2019 It still has similarities, in that it pushes the envelope,\u201d she said. \u201cThe thing about the film that I am most proud about is that it is in no way male bashing or male hating. It just happens to be that we\u2019re focusing on these women, today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, May 31 FilmOut honored \u201cSordid Lives\u201d creator Del Shores with a tribute and a Career Achievement Award. In addition to writing and directing \u201cSordid Lives,\u201d Shores has produced, directed and acted in several stage and television productions. The Shores tribute was presented in part by the South Park Business Group.<\/p>\n<p>Saying he is looking forward to meeting all the filmmakers and actors who will be attending this year\u2019s festival, McQuiggan added he expects the Sunday, June 3 closing night party at West Coast Tavern, located at 2895 University Ave., to be a success.<\/p>\n<p>All festival films are being screened at the Birch North Park Theatre, 2891 University Ave. Tickets for individual films are $10, with special prices for the closing night events. A festival pass, which allows attendees into each film as well as parties and tributes, is $125.
