{"id":234316,"date":"2017-11-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-10T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/community-lends-a-hand-to-restore-river\/"},"modified":"2017-11-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T08:00:00","slug":"community-lends-a-hand-to-restore-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/community-lends-a-hand-to-restore-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Community lends a hand to restore river"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por Sara Butler | Editor<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Annual San Diego River Park Foundation\u00a0<\/strong><strong>cleanup effort focuses on Mission Valley Preserve<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 28, 121 volunteers showed up at 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning to do their part for the Mission Valley Preserve.<\/p>\n<p>The cleanup, organized by the San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF) and the city of San Diego, was part of an annual SDRPF river preservation effort: Clean Sweep. In addition to answering financial questions at their booth, company representatives offered snacks and handed out towels to the volunteers throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>To kick off the event, Tiffany Swiderski, program coordinator of SDRPF, gave an introductory speech to the crowd about the 52-acre preserve, which is a rare resource in the commercial-centric community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you can see, we do not have a lot of open space in Mission Valley so this piece of property is really important,\u201d Swiderski said. \u201cUnfortunately, we have been plagued by invasive plants and trash and all sorts of nasty stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4811\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4811\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/missionvalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/tiffany-swiderski.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4811 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/missionvalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/tiffany-swiderski.jpg\" alt=\"Community lends a hand to restore river\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4811\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tiffany Swinderski, program coordinator of SDRPF, speaks to the group before the cleanup.<br \/><em>(Foto por Connor McBride)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After going over some safety information \u2013 including a warning about the possible hepatitis A risk \u2013 the volunteers were split up into different groups depending on their interest and skill level.<\/p>\n<p>Tasks included painting fences and tables, repairing murals, removing invasive species, and completing trail work. All ages and skill levels were welcome, with the youngest volunteer being 20-month-old Breckon of Pacific Beach.<\/p>\n<p>A large group of more than 90 members represented Torrey Pines Church and all donned \u201cI Love SD\u201d grey T-shirts. The majority of these volunteers worked on the north side of the San Diego River, where they pulled invasive species, raked debris, carried bundles and pushed wheelbarrows filled to the brim.<\/p>\n<p>Eastlake resident Angelica was one of the volunteers with Torrey Pines Church. She hopes that her efforts will encourage others, including her grandchildren, to help preserve our local environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The San Diego River] is so beautiful\u2026 why aren\u2019t we taking care of it?\u201d she asked. \u201cI plan to bring my grandkids to show them the river and the work we\u2019ve done. I [also] teach them not to litter or throw stuff out of the car. Sumstine graduated San Diego State University in May 2017 and plans to stay in San Diego to pursue environmental work in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Artistically-inclined individuals were stationed at the cartoon-style mural, which had been defaced with graffiti.
