Free mammograms at Petco Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On Saturday, May 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Padres Foundation and Susan G. Komen San Diego are partnering to offer free mammograms at Petco Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Padres and Padres Foundation are proud to support Susan G. Komen San Diego as they work to provide free, life-saving mammograms to our community,\u201d said Padres Senior Vice President of Community and Military Affairs, Tom Seidlerin, in a press release. \u201cWe value the relationship we have with Komen San Diego and are pleased to be able to work hand in hand toward their mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event at Petco Park will provide free mammograms and clinical breast exams for people in San Diego County who do not have health insurance or who are under-insured. Those who are eligible for a free screening at this event include women who are over 40 years of age and had their last mammogram at least one full year ago (365 days ago or longer), or those who are under 40 years of age and are experiencing symptoms.<\/p>\n

For women who haven\u2019t had a mammogram in a full year and need assistance, dialing 211 will connect them to a Komen San Diego breast health specialist. All participants will also receive a primary medical placement and be linked to a medical home, which is important for following up each year. Additional breast health information will also be available.<\/p>\n

Hera Hub founder named \u2018Cool Woman\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mission Valley resident Felena Hanson is among Girl Scouts San Diego\u2019s Cool Women of 2017. Reese received her Cool Woman award during a recent luncheon and ceremony at Paradise Point Resort.<\/p>\n

Hanson is the founder of Hera Hub, a spa-inspired shared workspace and community for women business owners who need a professional place to work productively on a flexible basis. The venture currently has three locations in San Diego County \u2014 Mission Valley, Carlsbad and Sorrento Valley.<\/p>\n

At the award luncheon, Hanson was presented by Girl Scout Caroline Sanborn, who commended Hanson for empowering women to succeed in business.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring her 20-year career, Felena Hanson has worked in technology startups and digital marketing agencies, and become a published author, teacher and international speaker,\u201d Sanborn told the audience. \u201cAs an entrepreneur with a background in marketing, she noticed that women starting their own businesses had a need for support. This led her launch Hera Hub. She is now aiming to expand the concept across the U.S. to help 20,000 women by the year 2020. Thank you, Felena, for supporting women like me on our journeys to becoming entrepreneurs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the luncheon, 30 teen Girl Scouts spent the morning in a mentoring session. Cool Women of 2017 and from prior years spoke with the girls in small groups about how to create successful careers and live fulfilling lives.<\/p>\n

The Cool Women event proceeds will help keep Girl Scouting available and affordable for more than 35,000 local girl and adult members.<\/p>\n

San Diego River Conservancy bill passes Senate<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On April 24, the California Senate passed SB 214, legislation meant to strengthen the capacity of the San Diego River Conservancy to\u00a0protect and enhance historic, cultural and natural resources within the watershed along the 52-mile San Diego River. The vote was 33-5. The measure now moves on to the Assembly.<\/p>\n

SB 214, which was conceived by Sen. Toni Atkins, adds representation from the city of Santee and the Kumeyaay Diegue\u00f1o Land Conservancy to the conservancy\u2019s board of directors. It also provides the conservancy with greater ability to enter into joint-powers agreements.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2015, the governor signed AB 392, my bill to make the San Diego River Conservancy permanent,\u201d Atkins said in a press release. \u201cSB 214 is the next step, giving the conservancy additional tools to improve the watershed and bringing important local voices to the table. I thank my Senate colleagues for moving this legislation forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben Clay, chair of the San Diego River Conservancy\u2019s board of directors, thanked Atkins for her \u201csupport\u00a0in helping the conservancy accomplish its mission in protecting the San Diego River, while also enhancing the recreational activities along the river from the ocean to the mountains in Julian.
