This year\u2019s keynote speaker will be the super talented Disney artist and illustrator, Terry Naughton, whose award-winning illustrations will be on display in our art gallery throughout November. Read more about Naughton, on the SCFOL website under \u201cArt Shows.\u201d The meeting\u2019s agenda will include the introduction of SCFOL\u2019s newest Life Members, election of 2019 SCFOL officers and board of directors, SCFOL and branch updates by President Joan Hayes and Managing Librarian David Ege, and of course, refreshments and interesting conversation. Become a SCFOL Life Member for just $250, before Oct. 30, to be included on the 2018 SCFOL Honor Wall. York enjoys many forms of artistic photography. Her work is both bold and delicate. Mountain\u2019s background in environmental geography shows off in his photos of natural landscapes and beautiful vistas taken in our East County neighborhoods. Their artist reception is Oct. 27, noon-2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you believe in ghosts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oct. 12, 2\u20134 p.m., investigate the world of the spirits when three members of Pacific Paranormal Investigations (PPI) research team present \u201cScience and Beyond.\u201d Learn the history of paranormal investigation, how to conduct your own inquiry into the supernatural, and about the skeptical approach that these local paranormal investigators take in gathering data about the possible presence of ghosts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autores y libros<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oct. 26, 2\u20133 p.m., author and motivational speaker Zoe Ghahramani returns to our branch to discuss her novels and what it means to be a good reader; what libraries do for us and what we can do for them. Ghahramani is a board member of the Friends of the San Diego Central Library. Her novel, \u201cSky of Red Poppies,\u201d was chosen as the 2012 One Book, One San Diego selection.<\/p>\n<p>The Library Book Club\u2019s October meeting was rescheduled for Oct. 18. The Club is reading Ivan Doig\u2019s final novel, \u201cLast Bus to Wisdom,\u201d for their Nov. 8, 12:30\u20132 p.m. meeting. Travel along and enjoy the uproarious misadventures of 11-year-old Donal and grand-uncle Herman the German, as they meet some far-out characters while riding a Greyhound bus to Montana from Wisconsin. Copies are located directly inside the library to your right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One Book, One San Diego special event<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The San Carlos Branch Library will host a free showing of the Oscar-winning short documentary, \u201cMighty Times: The Children\u2019s March,\u201d Tuesday, Oct. 16, 6\u20138 p.m. This film, for all age groups, highlights the heroism of the young activists of the 1963 Children\u2019s Crusade, and the themes of 2018\u2019s One Book, One San Diego selection: civil rights, social justice and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 One Book, \u201cMarch: Book One,\u201d is a graphic memoir, co-authored by Rep. John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell. The companion 2018 One Book for kids is &#8220;Blue Sky, White Stars,&#8221; written by Sarvinder Naberhaus and illustrated by Caldecott-winning artist Kadir Nelson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>College admission essay assistance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Library assistant III Sarah Hendy-Jackson will lead a new program series geared toward high school seniors to help them with their college admission essays. Students can drop in anytime during the dates\/times listed below to get free assistance with brainstorming, editing, organizing, grammar, word count, etc. Hendy-Jackson studied 19th-century American literature in graduate school at UCSD and has worked within the university\u2019s humanities department, teaching freshman writing, history, philosophy, and literature since 2011. Dates and times are Wednesdays, Oct. 17, and Nov. 14 and 21 from 6:30\u20137:30 p.m.; and Saturdays, Oct. 13 and 27 and Nov. 10 from 3\u20134 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The League of Extraordinary Scientists (LXS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two-thirds of the world\u2019s oxygen comes from plants in the ocean. Kids ages 8\u201312 can join LXS marine scientists, Oct. 24, 4\u20134:45 p.m., and learn what makes ocean plants different from land plants and about products that are made from them, like toothpaste and ice cream. Critical thinking and hypothesis formation skills are emphasized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trick-or-Read<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 31 anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., get your trick-or-treat on at the San Carlos Branch Library. First, view popular Halloween tales in an interactive exhibit posted around the library, then say, \u201cTrick-or-Read\u201d to a librarian and be treated to a free book! Join us at 2:30 p.m. for spooktacular stories and crafts. Costumes and all ages are welcome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reoccurring youth activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do Your Homework @ the Library is available for K-8 grades, Mondays and Thursdays, 3\u20136 p.m.; and Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 3\u20137 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>After School Special on Wednesdays, 2:30\u20133:30 p.m., are programs for ages 5\u201310 and include stories, silly songs, and crafts.<\/p>\n<p>Yoga &amp; Storytime for ages 3\u20138 at 4 p.m. is offered on Tuesdays, and chess for ages 18 and under from 5\u20137 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays.<\/p>\n<p>Process Art meets on Thursdays at 4 p.m. for ages 3\u20138, and Preschool Storytime &amp; Crafts are at 10 a.m. on Fridays. Pick up the fall youth schedule at the library, or download youth programs, \u201cIn\u2013A-Nutshell,\u201d from our website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mail-in ballot drop-off<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oct. 29\u2013Nov. 5, mail-in ballot drop-off will be available at the San Carlos Branch Library. Volunteers with the County Registrar of Voters will be on hand during regular library hours to collect ballots. Our branch\u2019s Community Room is a polling site on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The poll workers will collect ballots that day.
