The Patrick Henry High School (PHHS) Choirs will present a concert at 4 p.m. in Ascension Lutheran Church, 5106 Zion Ave.\u00a0This is part of the \u201cSounds of Ascension\u201d series which offers free musical events for the community.<\/p>\n

The choirs will present a variety of music including choral classics, Broadway tunes and international music. There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be taken to assist the PHHS choirs in raising funds for their program. A reception will follow the concert.<\/p>\n

The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation presents \u201cAmended Reality,\u201d an exhibit featuring works by artist Gail Ackley, in the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center Art Gallery, 1 Father Junipero Serra Trail.<\/p>\n

Ackley is interested in local shore birds. Her paintings also present elements of landscapes, as well as pieces drawn from family photos that communicate universal themes about relationships. The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

Community College Poetry Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Umoja Program will host the first poetry competition of Region 10 community colleges, including City, Southwestern, Mesa and MiraCosta colleges, as part of Black History Month events at Grossmont College.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Birth of a Nation\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Monday, Feb. 27<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Cuyamaca College Black Student Union will host a viewing of \u201cThe Birth of a Nation,\u201d based on the story of Nat Turner, the enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831.<\/p>\n

The screening is part of the college\u2019s program for Black History Month, and will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Digital Theater in B-101 on the campus at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in Rancho San Diego. Free and open to the public. Visit bit.ly\/2lMcOKq<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Traces of the Trade\u2019 screening and speaker<\/strong><\/p>\n

Monday, Feb. 27 and Tuesday, Feb. 28<\/strong><\/p>\n

A two-part program will conclude Grossmont College\u2019s celebration of Black History Month with a screening of \u201cTraces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep South\u201d on Feb. 27 and guest speaker Tom DeWolf, author of \u201cGather at the Table: The Healing Journey of a Daughter of Slavery and a Son of the Slave Trade,\u201d on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n

In \u201cTraces of the Trade,\u201d filmmaker Katrina Browne discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine cousins, including DeWolf, retrace the transatlantic slave trade. The Feb. 27 screening will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in Room 220, Building 26.<\/p>\n
