{"id":226631,"date":"2019-09-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/pearl-harbor-survivors-group-holds-final-meeting-in-la-mesa\/"},"modified":"2019-09-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T07:00:00","slug":"pearl-harbor-survivors-group-holds-final-meeting-in-la-mesa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/pearl-harbor-survivors-group-holds-final-meeting-in-la-mesa\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearl Harbor Survivors group holds final meeting in La Mesa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por DOUG CURLEE | Mensajero de La Mesa<\/p>\n<p>They survived the massive Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.<\/p>\n<p>More than 2,400 of their fellow sailors, soldiers and Marines didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>They recovered, fought in the Pacific and Europe, won WWII, and became known as the Greatest Generation.<\/p>\n<p>But they finally met the enemy no one can defeat \u2014 time.<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 21 brought about the end of the road for Carnation Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, 56 years after its founding, at the final meeting held at the Latter Day Saints church in La Mesa. They are family and friends of the survivors \u2014 wives, sons and daughters, grandchildren, and just supporters.<\/p>\n<p>But the Carnation Chapter, once the largest of several chapters nationwide, can no longer officially exist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rules say that the president and the vice president of the group must be actual survivors,\u201d said 98-year-old Hedley. \u201cThere is just no one who can fill the second chair, so we have to shut it down. We are really a dying organization, aren\u2019t we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no arguing that.<\/p>\n<p>There are seven actual survivors left in the group, but only one of them was able to make it to the luncheon \u2014 Clayton Schenkelberg, who will turn 102 next month.<\/p>\n<p>Hedley is the only one still able to walk and communicate well.<\/p>\n<p>So well, in fact, that he\u2019s booked for several appearances at schools and civic events over the next few months, despite the fact that he\u2019s fighting some serious physical challenges himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lord willing, of course,\u201d said the deeply religious Hedley.<\/p>\n<p>The Carnation Chapter people plan to continue to meet as a social group in the future, as much as they can.<\/p>\n<p>But they won\u2019t be collecting dues and sending them to the national Survivors Association \u2014 there is really no national association anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone knew this day was coming \u2014 which doesn\u2019t make it any easier.<\/p>\n<p>It never does.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Doug Curlee es un reportero de San Diego desde hace mucho tiempo tanto en prensa como en televisi\u00f3n. llegar a \u00e9l en <a href=\"mailto:dougcurlee@cox.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dougcurlee@cox.net<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By DOUG CURLEE |\u00a0La Mesa Courier They survived the massive Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
