{"id":225234,"date":"2018-06-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/sundays-at-six-kicks-off-with-patriotic-flair\/"},"modified":"2018-06-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T07:00:00","slug":"sundays-at-six-kicks-off-with-patriotic-flair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/sundays-at-six-kicks-off-with-patriotic-flair\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday\u2019s at Six kicks off with patriotic flair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por Jay Steiger<\/p>\n<p>With a roll of drums, blasts of brass, and whistling woodwinds echoing across the green of La Mesa\u2019s Harry Griffen Park, the 17th annual Sunday\u2019s at Six concert series kicked off on June 10 with a performance by The San Diego Concert Band.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Playing a repertoire drawing heavily on classic Americana music with marches, patriotic tunes, and even a Count Basie song, the band was well received and applauded by the hundreds of audience members in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>The band entertained with patriotic numbers such songs as \u201cAmerica the Beautiful,\u201d \u201cYankee Doodle,\u201d \u201cThe Light Cavalry Overture,\u201d and two pieces dedicated to the veterans of World War II \u2014 the theme from the movie \u201cMidway\u201d and Glenn Miller\u2019s \u201cAmerican Patrol.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7016\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lamesacourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Sunday-Concert-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7016 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lamesacourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Sunday-Concert-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sunday\u2019s at Six kicks off with patriotic flair\" width=\"600\" height=\"377\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/377;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The San Diego Concert Band performing at opening night of the Sundays at Six concert series on June 10 <em>(Photo by Jay Steiger)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis welcomed the attendees and introduced the band and it\u2019s conductor, Roy Anthony, Jr. Mayor Arapostathis noted that the idea for the concert series was created 18 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe free summer concerts in the park would bring the community together and showcase both the park and performing arts,\u201d he said, adding that he hopes even more people will come out to enjoy the music and park atmosphere at this \u201cwonderful event\u201d in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Additional concerts will include various genres of music, including country, soul, bluegrass and top 40. The series runs every Sunday through July 15.
