You can find records, cassettes, VHS, DVDs, posters, books, even movie dolls, from several of the past decades. A George Carlin record sits next to a Kris Allen album, underneath a Kiss poster.<\/p>\n<p>You may find a \u201cRocky Horror Picture Show\u201d plastic Dr. Frank-n-Furter figurine, or an original feminist literature title. The shop also supports local bands and smaller labels.<\/p>\n<p>Re-Animated Records is named for the campy \u201880s horror film \u201cReanimator,\u201d in which medical student Herbert West \u2018wakes up\u2019 dead tissue and brings the dead back to life in a gore-rific fashion. \u201cReanimator,\u201d \u201cPhantasm\u201d and anything by John Carpenter comprise owner Nicholas \u201cNick\u201d Friesen\u2019s favorite films.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4881\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4881\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lamesacourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/web-Jump-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4881 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lamesacourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/web-Jump-1.jpg\" alt=\"A spin with a twist\" width=\"350\" height=\"468\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 350px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 350\/468;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Customers Josh Weintraub and Toni Ontiveros pose<br \/> next to a cutout of Freddy Krueger. Friesen tried several times over the last five years to open a store such as this one, even looking at the same spot before all the downtown construction. But something always fell through, or an obstacle became too overwhelming. Then in April, Friesen and his wife Lynn decided to partner together and just do it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, we were like, \u2018What\u2019s the worst thing that could happen?\u2019\u201d Lynn recalled. \u201cWe said, \u2018Life\u2019s too short, let\u2019s do this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far, they have been welcomed with open arms by both the business and public community of La Mesa. They gush about their business neighbors and walk-in customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already have so many regulars,\u201d Lynn said.<\/p>\n<p>Nick handles all the inventory, of which there is plenty. (Etsy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe always want more!\u201d Nick said. \u201cWe never say we\u2019re not accepting items, because you don\u2019t know what you might miss out on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lynn handles the bookkeeping and other business activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do the behind-the-scenes work, so he can just buy and sell records all day,\u201d Lynn said with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s definitely where Nick\u2019s passion lies. He\u2019s a bass player and has worked in music and record stores since high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s so passionate \u2014 this is his jam,\u201d friend Dustin Harner said of the new store. \u201cPeople will definitely get the best of the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They will also get an opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind clothing. Lynn populates the store\u2019s clothing racks with her own line from the Etsy shop \u201cLynn\u2019s Rags.\u201d From a Rainbow Brite sheet-turned-skirt to an upcycled Iron Maiden T-shirt, her clothes have charm and character. And all are hand-sewn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost record stores are focused towards guys,\u201d Nick explains. \u201cI thought it was a good thing to bring girls\u2019 items in, too. It adds a nice touch to the shop. People liked her clothing as much as she did, and eventually it went from a hobby to a business.<\/p>\n<p>Just like how Nick\u2019s love of camp and media has turned into what could be a viable income. This is his baby, and along with a lot of help from family and friends (and three days without sleep before the grand opening), he and Lynn have made it happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth of us teared up on opening day,\u201d Nick said. \u201cIt felt like our wedding day. Totally overwhelming and surreal and incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Re-Animated Records is located at 8320 La Mesa Blvd. Open hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
