{"id":223610,"date":"2016-05-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/historical-society-rotary-club-unveil-historic-plaques\/"},"modified":"2016-05-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-05-27T07:00:00","slug":"historical-society-rotary-club-unveil-historic-plaques","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/historical-society-rotary-club-unveil-historic-plaques\/","title":{"rendered":"Historical Society, Rotary Club unveil historic plaques"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Jim Newland<\/p>\n<p>On May 19, The La Mesa Historical Society and Rotary Club of La Mesa announced the installation of 11 new historic photo plaques in the downtown Village.<\/p>\n<p>The historical photo plaque program looks to meet the Society\u2019s mission to educate the community and its visitors to the unique and inspiring history of La Mesa, and the Rotary Club of La Mesa\u2019s purpose to support the greater community through positive, lasting service.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Society\u2019s historic photo plaque program started in 2011 with the installation of a plaque at the Wolf Building (8360 La Mesa Blvd., Mostly Mission Furniture) to commemorate the centennial of the pioneering Flying A Motion Picture Company\u2019s residence there (1911 to 1912).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2608\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lamesacourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Plaque3web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2608 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/lamesacourier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Plaque3web.jpg\" alt=\"Plaque3web\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/399;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A plaque for the old Sheldon Service Station at La Mesa Boulevard and Fourth Street. (Courtesy of the La Mesa Historical Society)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Subsequently, these two long-standing service organizations, the Historical Society (formed 1975) and the Rotary Club of La Mesa (formed 1925), have partnered to develop and fund this new phase of 11 additional plaques featuring historic photos of prominent sites, locations and views, and brief interpretive texts.<\/p>\n<p>The plaques themselves feature historic images from the Society\u2019s collections that are laser-etched onto stainless steel panels that provide crisp reproductions of these photos in a long-lasting, fade-free format for the public to enjoy when visiting the downtown village.<\/p>\n<p>The Society and Rotary Club believe that this program will provide additional public service and educational benefits that compliments the city of La Mesa\u2019s recently completed Downtown Village Streetscape Improvement Project.<\/p>\n<p>A walking-guide brochure, that will also be available on the Society\u2019s website is currently in production and is hoped to be available in time for this year\u2019s Flag Day Parade on June 4.
