Great news for families:<\/strong> A new library just opened in East County and at least two more are in the works.<\/p>\n

The new county branch in Alpine is a beauty. It includes a community room, children\u2019s area and mosaics that tell the story of Alpine. It is believed to be the first \u201czero net energy\u201d structure built by local government in our region. Due to its novel design and next-gen energy features, it uses no more energy than it produces.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a landmark project for the county and saves taxpayer utility costs.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the recently approved county budget includes money for new libraries in Lakeside and Casa de Oro. Both would replace the dated, undersized branches in those communities.<\/p>\n

Stop scams:<\/strong> I want to thank the hundreds of seniors and caregivers from throughout East County who have attended my \u201cDon\u2019t Get Hooked\u201d events over the past year to learn how to fight off financial scammers.<\/p>\n

My office has teamed up with the District Attorney\u2019s Office, the Sheriff\u2019s Department and other agencies to bring attention to this important issue.<\/p>\n

I plan to host more of these free community forums in the future. Stay tuned.<\/p>\n

East County\u2019s finest:<\/strong> It\u2019s always a great privilege for me to present county proclamations to those who have done amazing things.<\/p>\n

A couple of recent recipients:<\/p>\n

  • Educator Janet Ratkovic Feilen. Janet was named Cajon Valley Teacher of the Year and San Diego County Teacher of the Year in 2015. She has helped “at risk” and disabled children for decades.<\/li>\n
  • Rachel Owens-Sarno of Lakeside. Rachel began her rodeo career in 2009 and is now the reigning Miss Rodeo California.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Local heroes like these do us proud each and every day!<\/p>\n
