The county has worked hard over the years to boost backcountry fire and emergency services. As we approach peak fire season, we\u2019ve got more fire engines, ambulances, helicopters and firefighters in place, among many other improvements.<\/p>\n We have more work ahead of us, as the Grand Jury noted, but we\u2019re better prepared for wildfire than ever. A major disaster will strike again someday, and when it does, we want to make sure we\u2019re as prepared as we can be.<\/p>\n The Grand Jury\u2019s conclusion is good news and validates our ongoing work on this critical issue.<\/p>\n Public safety<\/strong>: A bigger, better Sheriff\u2019s Department station is opening this spring in Lakeside, replacing a leased storefront that had housed deputies.<\/p>\n The Parkside Street facility is the latest in a series of Sheriff\u2019s station improvements across East County. Last year, the county opened stations in Pine Valley and Rancho San Diego.<\/p>\n Watch out for scams<\/strong>: I recently joined law enforcement officials and others to announce a new local effort to educate older residents and their families about how they can protect themselves from financial scams online, over the phone and in the mail.<\/p>\n The campaign includes television spots and a booklet called \u201cDon\u2019t Get Hooked\u201d that will be made available at senior centers.
